Abstract

The method for breaking a current in medium or high-voltage applications uses a switch with a pair of contact members (1,2), at least one of which is moved from a closed position, in which the members are in electrical contact with each other, to an open position where they are separated. An electrical arc is generated during the separation movement. For high currents, the arc is extinguished by a pressurized gas directed towards it, and which is generated by using the energy of the arc itself. For low currents, the arc is extinguished by squeezing it in an area between a first and second insulating body (3,4).
