Abstract

A h.v. power switch has contacts (1, 2) that in the engaged position are bridged by a sliding contact (3). Formed between the hollow contacts is an arcing chamber (13). A heating chamber for extinguishing gas (4) is formed between insulating material (4, 5, 6) and an annular space (8) connects with the arcing region and a second heating space (9). This space receives the bridging contact (3) in the on state. When the switch is operated to open the contacts a piston (15) compresses gas in a chamber (14) and it is forced through to extinguish the arc formed by contact opening.
