Abstract

FIELD: measurement technology. SUBSTANCE: in compliance with method particles are classified depending on presence or absence of special substance in them. First example deals with analysis of particle of kimberlite examined for presence of diamonds. In this case each particle is irradiated by beam of fast neutrons at resonance energy level for special substance. Image characterizing passage of beam through particle is obtained for each particle. Particles are then classified depending on whether obtained image demonstrates presence or absence of special substance. This method may be enhanced by irradiation of particles with beams of neutrons at resonance and nonresonance levels. In this case resulting image is generated from transmission spectrum at both energy levels. Classification is performed later on basis of analysis of resulting image. EFFECT: improved efficiency of method and reliability of device.

Particles are classified according to the presence or absence of a particular substance in the particles. In one example, kimberlite particles are analyzed for diamond. In this method, each particle is irradiated by a beam of fast neutrons at a resonant energy level for a particular substance. For each particle, an image is obtained that characterizes the transmission of a beam by a particle. Particles are then classified depending on whether the resulting image shows the presence of a particular substance in the particle or not. This method can be enhanced by irradiating particles with neutron beams at resonant and non-resonant energy levels, and the resulting image is obtained from the transmission spectrum at both energy levels. Then, classification is carried out based on the analysis of the resulting image.
