Abstract

FIELD: classification of particles according to their composition. SUBSTANCE: particles are subjected to electromagnetic radiation, normally by X-rays at first and second energy levels. Produced are first and second values demonstrating attenuation of radiation in each particle. Then third value is obtained as difference between first and second values or their ratio. Particle are classified according to what is shown by third value, namely presence of definite matter. In one of possible applications, method can be used for classification of diamond- containing kimberlite into fraction consisting of particles containing diamond inclusions and fraction consisting only of kimberlite particles. EFFECT: high efficiency.

The invention relates to a method for classifying particles by their composition. In this method, particles are irradiated with electromagnetic radiation, usually x-rays, at the first and second energy levels. The first and second quantities are obtained, representing the attenuation of radiation in each particle. Then the third quantity is obtained as the difference between the first and second quantities or their ratio, and the particles are classified depending on whether the third quantity indicates the presence of a certain substance in the particle. In one application, the method can be used to classify diamond-containing kimberlite into a fraction consisting of particles containing diamond inclusions and a fraction consisting only of kimberlite particles.
