The invention relates to the field of metallurgy of non-ferrous metals, in particular to the electrolytic production of magnesium and chlorine in a continuous production line. Achievable result: increasing the degree of purification of chloride melts from impurities, reducing labor costs and specific energy consumption. The essence of the invention lies in the fact that the electrochemical cleaning of the melt from impurities is carried out in the first electrolytic compartments downstream of the melt at 0.5 - 0.75 of the nominal interelectrode distance and increased current density at the electrodes, and the electrolysis of magnesium chloride in the last compartment at the optimal interelectrode distance .
