The invention relates to methods for analyzing materials using optical means, in particular using IR rays. The invention can be used to control the toxicity of exhaust gases in engines, heat generators, etc., as well as to control the purity of the air. The method consists in that the analyzed gas mixture is illuminated with IR rays from interchangeable sources of IR radiation and the absorption of IR energy is measured using an IR receiver. In this case, the radiation spectrum of the source of infrared rays contains resonant frequencies (lines of vibrational-rotational transitions) of only one of the analyzed gases. This is achieved by filling the source vessel with an inert gas mixture with one of the analyzed gases and maintaining the gas temperature at the source that is different from the wall temperature and other source elements. A device for implementing the proposed method contains an IR receiver, an electronic unit for processing receiver signals, an optical cell filled with the gas mixture being analyzed, and five interchangeable IR radiation sources for determining CO, CO 2 , NO, CH 4 and SO 2 . Replaceable sources of IR radiation in the device are made in the form of closed vessels cooled by air or water, having a window transparent in the IR region, filled with a mixture of one of the analyzed gases with an inert gas, equipped with an element for heating the gas and elements for initiating periodic gas movement in the source vessel. As a result of the operation of all elements of the source, a portion of the heated gas is periodically thrown into the zone in front of the window of the source vessel, which leads to the appearance of pulses of resonant IR radiation. Absorption of this radiation by the analyzed gas mixture gives information about its composition.
