The inventive unbleached pulp is combined with an aqueous alkaline solution in a state of low consistency for almost uniform distribution of the first portion of alkaline material throughout the pulp. Next, the consistency of the pulp is increased to a level above 18% and then the high consistency containing base is treated with oxygen for delignification. The total amount of alkaline material introduced into the fibrous mass is from 0.8 to 7 wt. % in terms of absolutely dry weight of the fibrous material. The result is high-strength fibrous materials with a low content of lignin, which can be subjected to additional bleaching to a high degree of whiteness with minimal consumption of chemicals.
