The method relates to the production of rare earth elements and consists in the metallothermic reduction of scandium from an alkali metal chloride. A feature of this method is the use of fine lithium and self-propagating high-temperature synthesis for the recovery of scandium. The mixture of reagents is heated to 200 - 400 ° C, and the reaction products are dissolved in boiling methanol. Scandium powder is isolated from suspension, washed with methanol and dried in vacuum. The method allows to reduce energy costs, since the process can be conducted at low temperatures.
