Пропольник действует при движениях рук оператора вперед-назад и легко сдвигается в стороны благодаря загнутым концам лезвия. Пропольник снабжен двумя сменяемыми лезвиями: коротким - для уничтожения окрепшего сорняка и порослей и длинным - для культивации картофельных междурядий.
