Abstract
Description
1. Purpose and scope.
The scope of the invention relates to chemical methods of soil analysis using a flame photometric analyzer, for example, when assessing sulfate salinization of the soil, as well as to determine the content of sulfate ion in agricultural soils, greenhouse soils and with all types of land reclamation.
The invention, for example, can be effectively used in laboratories of the agrochemical service and in other analytical laboratories when measuring the concentration of sulfate ions in soil samples with extraction by aqueous extract.
Known methods for determining the sulfate ion in an aqueous extract from saline soils by gravimetric or turbidimetric method (GOST 26426-85).
In the case of using the gravimetric method, the sulfate ion in the aqueous extract is precipitated with barium chloride. The precipitate obtained is filtered, washed, dried, calcined and weighed. The amount of sulfate ion is calculated from the amount of barium sulfate obtained. The method is painstaking, time-consuming and not very productive.
In the case of using the turbidimetric method, a solution of barium chloride with polyvinyl alcohol or glycerin is added to the resulting aqueous extract. The whole mixture is shaken, and the precipitate of barium sulfate is in suspension for a certain time. Suspension photometry is carried out on a photocolorimeter at a wavelength of 520 nm in a cuvette with a base of 10 mm. The method is simple and quite productive. However, it is designed for soil extracts of saline soils with a high content of sulfate ion. On ordinary soils, the determination of the sulfate ion in an aqueous extract by the turbidimetric method is difficult due to the low sensitivity of the device when measuring a low concentration of sulfate ion. In addition, the impossibility of determining the sulfate ion in soil extracts stained with humic compounds can be attributed to a disadvantage of the method. In addition, to clean the walls of the cuvette from a suspension of barium sulfate, it is necessary to use an alkaline solution of Trilon B, in which they are placed for 1 hour. It also reduces analytical performance.
The proposed method for the determination of sulfate ion in an aqueous soil extract does not have these drawbacks.
3. Disclosure of the invention.
The essence of the method is as follows.
An exact volume of a solution of an element of known concentration that binds a sulfate ion into an insoluble compound, for example, a solution of barium chloride, is added to the selected volume of soil extract. As a result of the reaction of barium ions with sulfate ions of soil extract, an insoluble compound of barium sulfate is formed, which precipitates. This leads to a decrease in the amount of soluble barium added to the soil extract. The decrease in the amount of soluble barium is determined by the flame photometric method and the amount of bound sulfur in the form of sulfate is calculated by comparing the results with the data of calibration solutions.
To increase the accuracy of the method, flame-photometric measurements of the intensity of barium emission lines are corrected depending on changes in the intensity of the emission lines of the flame itself, for example, the emission lines of carbon monoxide (CO), which is always present in a propane flame. The influence of calcium and other elements, which also reacts with the sulfate ion to form slightly soluble sulfate compounds in water, is neutralized by adding diluted hydrochloric acid to the soil extract, in which they are easily soluble. Barium concentration is measured in the spectral range of 780-800 nm. Use a propane-air burner flame.
The sequence of technological operations for the proposed method is as follows. A portion of air-dry soil is placed in the capacity of the process cassette. A certain volume of distilled water, which is purified by boiling, is added to the container. The containers are hermetically sealed and shaken to extract sulfates. The resulting suspension is centrifuged or filtered through a paper filter to separate and obtain a liquid fraction. An aliquot is taken from the obtained liquid fraction, transferred to another container and a known volume of barium solution of the required concentration is added, which ensures the binding of the entire amount of sulfate in the sample and ensures the presence of the remainder of the initial barium solution not bound to sulfates.
The liquid fraction obtained from a suspension of barium sulfate is separated from the precipitate by centrifugation or filtration, or by sedimentation of the suspension. In contrast to the known methods for determining the sulfate ion (Section 2), the concentration of the remaining barium in the solution that is not associated with sulfates is determined using a flame photometric device, the design of which ensures the correction of measurements of the intensity of barium emission lines depending on changes in the intensity of carbon monoxide emission lines in the flame.
The emission lines of barium in the low-temperature flame of propane, or butane, are superimposed on the wide emission lines of carbon monoxide (CO), which is part of the combustible gases (see Fig. 1-3). The stability of the emission of barium lines depends on the stability of the radiation of the latter. However, in practical use of the device, changes in the intensity of the emission lines of combustible gas occur, which are difficult to control. This may be due to the instability of the gas and air supply to the burner, a change in the ambient temperature, or the temperature of the analyzed solution, and other factors affecting the stability of the burner flame as a whole. A change in the intensity of the emission lines of the flame leads to a shift in the position of the maximum spectral density of the emission lines of barium, and to a change in their intensity if they are determined from the level of "absolute zero" intensity. Therefore, the use of standard flame photometers with interference filters, which determine the emission intensity at a fixed frequency from the zero level of intensity, does not provide the necessary accuracy to determine small changes in the concentration of barium in solution required to implement the proposed method.
The essence of the proposed device is that the design provides a correction of the measurements of the intensity of the barium emission lines depending on the change in the intensity of the emission lines of carbon monoxide in the flame, which leads to an increase in the accuracy of measurements of small changes in the concentration of barium in the solution and therefore increases the accuracy of determining the concentration of sulfate in the analyzed sample . For this, the position of the maximum spectral density of the barium emission line in the range of its possible changes from 780 nm to 800 nm, and the position of the maximum spectral density of the emission line of carbon monoxide (CO) of combustible gas in the range of its possible changes from 750 nm to 820 nm are determined. The correction of the intensity of the barium emission line is made by subtracting from the radiation intensity at the maximum of its spectral density the half-sum of the carbon monoxide (CO) radiation intensity in the frequency ranges 750 nm and 820 nm.
The sulfur content in the form of a sulfate ion is calculated by the difference between the initial amount of added barium and its residue in the analyzed solution.
The proposed method is simple, 10 times more productive than the weight analysis method, twice as much as the nephelometric method, allows you to determine the amount of sulfate ion in soil extracts stained with humic compounds, and makes it possible to determine the content of this indicator in a wide range of sulfate ion concentrations: from the usual content in soil to the content in the soils of sulfate salinization.
