Abstract
Description
The invention relates to optical instrumentation and can be used to determine the polarization characteristics of laser radiation, in particular the polarization sign of circularly and elliptically polarized laser radiation.
By the polarization sign of circularly and elliptically polarized laser radiation is meant the direction of rotation of the electric field vector in circularly and elliptically polarized laser radiation.
1985. 9. С. 370-372].A known method for determining the polarization sign of circularly and elliptically polarized laser radiation, in which the analyzed radiation is first converted using a quarter-wave plate into linearly polarized, and then passing through the analyzer, gets on the photocell, which measures its intensity. The diagram of the intensity distribution from the angle of rotation of the analyzer constructed in the polar coordinate system has the form of a "figure eight". Depending on in which quadrants of the coordinate system the diagram is located, the sign of polarization is determined [Physical Workshop. Electricity and optics. Ed. 2nd. Ed. prof. IN AND. Iveronova. M .: Nauka, 1968]. There is also a method for determining the polarization sign of circularly and elliptically polarized laser radiation, in which the laser radiation is directed to a photosensitive element in the form of a lithium niobate crystal, equipped with flat electrodes on the irradiated side, the polarity of the electric signal between which indicates the polarization sign [Kazan P.G. Prokhorov A.M., Chernykh V.A. Direct detection of circular photocurrent in lithium niobate // Letters in JETP. 1985.Vol. 41, no. 9. S. 370-372].
The disadvantages of these methods are the duration of determining the sign of polarization in the first case and the use in both cases of bulk expensive optical crystals that operate in relatively narrow spectral ranges.
2014. Т. 40, №10. С. 37-45].The closest in technical essence to the claimed method is a method for determining the sign of the polarization of circularly and elliptically polarized laser radiation, including the exposure of the analyzed photosensitized film photosensitive element located irradiated interelectrode section inclined to the incident laser beam so that the plane of incidence of the beam on the film is parallel electrodes, measuring the electrical signal between the electrodes and determining the sign of polarization by polar the measured electric signal, in which a silver-palladium resistive film is used as a photosensitive element [Mikheev G.M., Saushin A.S., Zonov R.G., Styapshin V.M. Spectral dependence of the circular photocurrent in silver-palladium resistive films // Letters in ZhTF. 2014.Vol. 40, No. 10. S. 37-45].
The disadvantage of this method is the inability to determine the sign of polarization in the ultraviolet wavelength range.
The objective of the invention is to develop a method for determining the sign of polarization of circularly and elliptically polarized laser radiation with the ability to work in the ultraviolet region of the spectrum.
The essence of the invention lies in the fact that, in contrast to the known method for determining the sign of the polarization of circularly and elliptically polarized laser radiation, including the action of the analyzed radiation on a film-sensitive photosensitive element arranged with two electrodes, the irradiated interelectrode section is inclined to the incident laser beam so that the plane of incidence of the beam on the film is parallel to the electrodes, measuring the electrical signal between the electrodes and determining the sign of polarization by polarity of the measured electrical signal, a nanocrystalline copper selenide film with a thickness of 50 to 500 nm is used as a photosensitive element.
Для получения максимального коэффициента фотовольтаического преобразования нанокристаллическую пленку селенида меди располагают к лучу лазера под углом ±(55±10)°.To obtain the maximum photovoltaic conversion coefficient, the nanocrystalline film of copper selenide is positioned to the laser beam at an angle of ± (55 ± 10) °.
The technical result is to enable the method for determining the sign of polarization of circularly and elliptically polarized laser radiation in the ultraviolet region of the spectrum.

The top inset contains polarization ellipses corresponding to different angles γ.
The method for determining the sign of polarization of circularly and elliptically polarized laser radiation according to this invention is as follows. The analyzed laser radiation with circular or elliptical polarization is directed to the surface of the nanocrystalline film of copper selenide (Fig. 1). The film is equipped with two electrodes and is located irradiated interelectrode section obliquely to the incident laser beam so that the plane of incidence is parallel to the electrodes. Due to the surface photovoltaic effect, the effect of circularly or elliptically polarized laser radiation on the surface of the film leads to the generation of a unipolar electrical signal (photo emf) between the electrodes, the polarity of which is recorded by an electrical measuring device. The electrode left of the plane of incidence, when viewed in the direction of the beam, acquires a positive potential relative to the right electrode at a positive angle of incidence (α> 0 in Fig. 1) and a negative sign of polarization of the laser radiation, as well as a negative angle of incidence and a positive sign of laser polarization radiation. The same electrode acquires a negative potential with respect to the right electrode at a positive angle of incidence and a positive sign of polarization of the laser radiation, as well as at a negative angle of incidence and a negative sign of polarization of the laser radiation. In this case, the direction of rotation of the vector of the electric field in circularly and elliptically polarized laser radiation clockwise when viewed towards the laser beam is taken as the positive sign of polarization, and the direction of rotation of this vector counterclockwise for the same observation scheme is taken as the negative sign.
2012. 9. С. 514-517].A nanocrystalline film of copper selenide is formed on a glass substrate in a single vacuum cycle by thermal evaporation in the mode of explosive crystallization [Kogai V.Ya., Vakhrushev A.V., Fedotov A.Yu. Spontaneous explosive crystallization and phase transformations in a nanoscale two-layer selenium / copper film // Letters in JETP. 2012.V. 95, Issue. 9. S. 514-517].
As an electrical measuring device, you can use an oscilloscope or any other recorder of bipolar impulse voltage, which, for example, may consist of an amplifier with a wide passband, a storage-sample circuit and a voltmeter designed to measure voltage of positive and negative polarity.
In the case of a pulsed laser radiation with energy E and pulse duration τ falling on a copper selenide nanocrystalline film, a unipolar pulsed photo emf appears in the film, which is characterized by the extreme value U of the electric signal arising between the electrodes. Since the dependence of U on the incident laser radiation power for a nanocrystalline copper selenide film is linear, the photovoltaic conversion coefficient η can be used as a quantitative measure of the conversion efficiency of the incident laser radiation into an electric signal arising between the electrodes:
η=Uτ/E.η = Uτ / E.
Note that, in accordance with this formula, the photovoltaic conversion coefficient can take both positive and negative values depending on the polarity of the recorded electrical signal.
We experimentally established that the sign of the photovoltaic conversion coefficient in nanocrystalline films of copper selenide depends on the polarization characteristics of the incident laser radiation, which can be smoothly changed by rotation of the quarter-wave plate 6 (Fig. 2). This is demonstrated by the curve (Fig. 3) obtained by irradiating a nanocrystalline film of copper selenide with a thickness of 300 nm by ultraviolet laser radiation with a wavelength of 266 nm. When the quarter-wave plate is rotated through which the laser radiation linearly polarized in the σ plane passes, the ellipticity of the polarization and the sign of the polarization of radiation at its output change by a certain angle γ. For example, in the range of angles γ from nπ to (n + 1) π / 2, where n = 0, 1, 2, ..., the rotation of the electric field vector emerging from the quarter-wave plate of the laser radiation occurs counterclockwise when observed towards the laser beam, and the sign of polarization is negative. In the experiment, this case corresponds to the positive sign of the photovoltaic conversion coefficient or the positive polarity of the photo emf induced in the nanocrystalline film of copper selenide. Within the angles γ from (n + 1) π / 2 to (n + 1) π, the rotation of the electric field vector of the laser radiation emerging from the quarter-wave plate occurs clockwise for the same observation parameters, and the sign of circular polarization is positive. In the experiment, this case corresponds to the negative sign of the photovoltaic conversion coefficient or the negative polarity of the photo emf induced in the nanocrystalline film of copper selenide.
The experiments showed that when the thickness of the nanocrystalline film of copper selenide is less than 50 nm and more than 500 nm, the electrical signal arising between the electrodes is significantly weakened.
Thus, when circularly or elliptically polarized laser radiation acts on the surface of a nanocrystalline film of copper selenide with a thickness of 50 to 500 nm, located by the irradiated interelectrode section, inclined to the incident laser beam so that the plane of incidence of the beam on the film is parallel to the electrodes, an electrical signal appears between these electrodes whose polarity depends on the sign of the polarization of the radiation. This allows you to uniquely determine the sign of the polarization of the incident laser radiation by the polarity of the recorded electrical signal.
Также экспериментально установлено, что при воздействии циркулярно или эллиптически поляризованным лазерным излучением на нанокристаллическую пленку селенида меди максимальный коэффициент фотовольтаического преобразования в ней достигается при углах падения ±(55±10)°.It was also experimentally established that, when a nanocrystalline copper selenide film is exposed to circular or elliptically polarized laser radiation, the maximum photovoltaic conversion coefficient in it is reached at incidence angles of ± (55 ± 10) °.
