FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to copper leaching and, in particular, to a hydrometallurgical leaching process for oxidized copper ores, providing the manufacture of copper cathodes, sheets or cemented copper, and in particular to a process that uses an organic non-polluting leaching agent.
State of the art
In the mining industry, copper leaching is confronted with many unsolved problems and disadvantages associated with both the processes used and the consequences that their application leads to. In particular, for the application of this process in the mining industry, it was necessary to use sulfuric acid as a leaching agent, which has a particularly harmful effect on the environment due to its strong polluting ability. At the same time, this acid is especially dangerous for people who work directly with it or in those places where it is used. Further, its use makes it impossible to reuse waste water, which leads to additional costs and to an increase in acid waste pollution. In addition, the leaching method currently used in the mining industry is unsuitable for efficiently recovering the copper remaining in the leach stack, which makes it a low-efficiency process, which entails high additional costs, as described above. Therefore, taking into account the prior art, it can be considered that leaching of copper in the mining industry is still a complex, expensive, highly polluting process that does not provide satisfactory results.
Currently, copper continues to be in great demand, which, presumably, will grow not only due to the many areas in which this metal can be used, but also due to the prospects of its use in various continuously carried out technological and industrial developments in such sectors of the economy as electronics, computing, telecommunications, pipe manufacturing, solar panel manufacturing, the automotive industry, power transmission, etc., making copper one of the best my demanded metals. Thus, it is very important to have high-performance and efficient copper production processes that reduce costs, prevent environmental pollution, increase operational safety and optimize production capacity, which is of great importance for the mining industry and, consequently, for the global economy.
With that said, the following describes some of the processes that have been used so far to leach copper ores:
i) аммиачное выщелачивание;i) ammonia leaching;
ii) тиомочевинное выщелачивание;ii) thiourea leaching;
iii) использование морской воды и селитры;iii) use of sea water and saltpeter;
iv) выщелачивание с использованием кислот;iv) leaching using acids;
v) выщелачивание серной кислотой и водой.v) leaching with sulfuric acid and water.
Due to various factors, these processes do not provide optimal results for ensuring production efficiency, including, first of all, due to high implementation costs, operational complexity and strong environmental impact.
In fact, the ammonia leaching process is not widely used in industry due to its strong polluting ability and high toxicity of ammonia.
Leaching with thiourea, a product formed by the interaction of organic substances with sodium cyanide, also turned out to be a process unsuitable for use in the mining industry due to its strong environmental impact.
The leaching process using saltpeter and sea water also could not be realized due to the low purity of the resulting copper liquor due to the formation of crystals of excess salt.
In turn, leaching with pure acids or mixtures of acids, such as hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, or a mixture of acids known as aqua regia, was used to dissolve noble metals such as gold and silver, but this method turned out to be extremely non-ecological, toxic and expensive and is used only in laboratory conditions. Finally, leaching using sulfuric acid (H 2 S0 4 ) and water (H 2 0) gives satisfactory results, with almost all copper leaching in the mining industry using this method. This process, which allows one to obtain copper cathodes from oxidized copper ore, begins with grinding and classification of the extracted ore, then impregnated the pre-ground and classified ore with a solution of sulfuric acid in water, stacked in leach piles, irrigated the piles with a solution of sulfuric acid in water (adjusting the acidity in depending on the mineralogical characteristics of the deposit, usually in the pH range from 1.5 to 3.0), and soluble copper sulfate is obtained as a result. Sulfuric acid leaches copper together with other substances contained in the original ore, the so-called impurities. After the time spent in the leach stack, contaminated copper liquor is obtained that contains iron and other substances in suspension. This copper liquor is subjected to a treatment called solvent extraction, which purifies and concentrates the copper liquor in the aqueous phase, hereinafter referred to as a rich solution. This solution, enriched with copper, is sent to storage tanks, from where it is pumped to the electro-deposition unit, where the electrochemical deposition of metallic copper (at the cathodes) takes place. After a predetermined residence time has elapsed, cathodes of suitable mass are obtained, washed and marketed as high-purity copper cathodes. After completion of the leaching cycle of the stack, such a stack is disposed of.
There are several problems that arise during this process. Firstly, due to the use of sulfuric acid as a leaching agent, this process is very toxic and polluting. Secondly, to work with this acid requires the use of expensive acid-resistant machines, instruments, equipment, accessories and materials, which significantly increases production costs. Thirdly, operational risks are great, and accidents have serious consequences for staff and workers. Fourth, at the solvent extraction stage, the risk of an accident increases due to the use of an extracting agent (containing aldoximes and ketoximes or other similar components), which, when mixed with liquid paraffin (or kerosene), forms toxic and combustible gases, which serve as a constant source of danger workplace. In practice, this stage in itself has a number of unresolved problems and shortcomings, in particular, related to security, high investment costs (especially related to the use of an extracting agent), its implementation and staff training, and the present invention allows to eliminate all of these problems and disadvantages, as will be shown below. Fifthly, the currently used process is inefficient from a production point of view due to the high proportion of material losses. In fact, as soon as the heap leaching process ends, the stack is disposed of, as indicated earlier, therefore, the oxidized copper ore remaining on it is lost. These losses prevent 100% copper recovery due to the limited penetration of sulfuric acid into the rock, and its repeated grinding is not possible due to the presence of free acid in it. Further, the material from the leach piles is dumped into dumps, with losses accounting for about 30% of the amount of copper contained in the stack, and noble metals such as gold and silver go to the dump, in addition to inclusions of insoluble copper (copper sulfide). which could also be extracted. Sixth, in addition to these losses, it is impossible to reuse the water used in the process, due to the presence of contamination in the form of iron sulfate, therefore, it is necessary to send water containing free sulfuric acid along with impurities to the tail dam. Seventh, the inability to process waste causes significant environmental damage, since residual sulfuric acid continues to be present in the discarded material. In addition, in accordance with the previous description, in addition to reducing process performance due to these losses, the waste is highly polluting and dangerous, potentially able to spread by winds, rainwater and groundwater in the surrounding area, thereby affecting crops, flora and fauna of the ecosystem and on the environment as a whole. As mentioned above, this process is currently used to leach copper in the mining industry almost everywhere. As a result, such a process is not only associated with large investment costs, it is unproductive, dangerous from an operational point of view, harms the environment and significantly complicates the leaching of copper. Therefore, a system that allows us to improve and optimize this process is of particularly important production and economic importance.
Thus, in the mining industry, there is currently no process allowing copper leaching in an efficient, safe and non-polluting way. In other words, the known processes of copper leaching in the mining industry are characterized by a number of problems and disadvantages affecting various critical areas, the solution of which is possible using the invention described in this application.
Disclosure of invention
The present invention eliminates all the previously described disadvantages and implements a unique process that uses a specially developed agent for leaching copper, which contains tricarboxylic acid (C 6 H 8 O 7 ) in combination with water (H 2 O) in a proportion that allows you to maintain a pH in a range from 1.0 to 5.0; sodium benzoate (C 6 H 5 COONa) or E211 can be added to it as a preservative, which inhibits the growth of microorganisms, in a maximum proportion of 0.05% to 1.00% of the specified solution.
Accordingly, this process does not harm the environment, since leaching produces copper citrate, which, moreover, does not have a corrosive effect. This feature is very important, since the formation of copper citrate can reuse the water used in the production process. In addition, when using this method, the implementation costs are reduced, since the use of materials with high resistance to the effects of highly corrosive products or elements is not required, as when using sulfuric acid, since the proposed leaching agent and the resulting copper citrate are not corrosive substances.
In practice, devices such as injection pumps, pipes for transporting fluids, shut-off and control valves, electrolysis baths, work clothes and protective equipment (e.g. overalls, glasses or gas masks), storage tanks, floor coverings, roofing and supporting structures among other things, they must meet stringent requirements for acid resistance, which leads to higher investment costs, which can be avoided by the process described in this application.
The proposed process also provides a significant increase in operational safety. Due to the design and process parameters, toxic gases are practically not formed, which allows personnel to move freely around the production site. In addition, this improvement is manifested in the absence of risk for maintenance personnel and workers to get acid burn in the event of an accident, which makes this process one of the most reliable and safe among the copper leaching processes in the mining industry. In turn, the elements, design and stages provided for in the process according to this application, as well as the specific qualities of the leaching agent used, allow selective leaching of copper. This feature is very important because it allows not to dissolve the iron and dispense with the solvent extraction step. Therefore, this process allows us to exclude one of the stages, which, as indicated earlier in this application, still creates serious problems in the leaching of copper in the mining industry, and all these problems have been resolved, since copper citrate is free from impurities of iron in a concentrated dissolved state allows immediately after the leaching stage to carry out the stage of electrodeposition and thus solve the problems described, getting the cathodes of metallic copper in a safer and more efficient way compared to all of estno techniques in the mining industry.
In turn, the process described in this application allows to achieve a high level of production efficiency due to the extraction of copper from waste or residual copper from leaching stacks by repeated grinding carried out by the wet method, and the previously mentioned leaching agent allows to increase the production of dissolved copper at least than 30% and recover precious metals (gold, silver and platinum), as well as copper sulfides. In addition, the process according to this application allows, if necessary, to obtain cemented copper at the stage carried out after processing the stacks for leaching, and thereby expand the range of products that can be obtained using this process.
Finally, another additional advantage of the process described in this application is that it allows the use of waste water, which eliminates the need for tailing dams, which not only increase costs, but also cause great harm to the environment.
The implementation of the invention
The advantages described above are provided by the invention in accordance with the present application, which is a hydrometallurgical leaching process of oxidized copper ores, which allows the production of cathodes, sheets or cemented copper, uses an organic non-polluting leaching agent and includes the following steps.
А. A. Leaching of oxidized copper ore. After the ore arrives from the mine, primary, secondary and tertiary milling is performed to classify it, and then it is fed to the sintering stage to soak it with an aqueous solution (or leach solution), which is an aqueous solution consisting of tricarboxylic acid (C 6 H 8 O 7 ) and water (H 2 O) having a pH in the range from 1.0 to 5.0, to which sodium benzoate (C 6 H 5 COONa) or E211 can be added as a preservative to suppress the growth of microorganisms in the maximum proportion of 0.05% to 1.00% by weight of the specified solution. Then, the material impregnated with the solution is transported and stacked in leach piles, which are irrigated with the specified aqueous solution (or leach solution). This irrigation is carried out by dividing the leach piles into sectors and subsequently irrigating the piles with a leaching agent, which makes it possible to obtain copper liquor in which copper citrate is formed under the action of the leaching agent. The obtained citrate, which does not contain iron and other impurities in the dissolved state, is used together with the leaching agent to irrigate the leaching stacks, as described previously, in sectors in a certain sequence, which allows to increase the concentration of dissolved copper to approximately 50 g / l. Irrigation is carried out before the depletion of copper in the stack, while the duration of irrigation depends on the kinetics of leaching of each mineral. Thus, the result is a concentrate of dissolved copper citrate, suitable for electrodeposition, which allows you to immediately carry out the stage of electrodeposition and to obtain copper cathodes or sheets, as well as other copper-based products. Therefore, this process eliminates the need for a solvent extraction step, since, on the one hand, the obtained copper citrate does not contain iron (and other impurities), which does not dissolve at the leaching stage, and, on the other hand, the process allows the concentration of dissolved copper to be increased to a level suitable for electrodeposition.
В. B. Electrodeposition. In the next stage, the copper citrate obtained in the previous stage is supplied at a certain rate to the electrolysis baths, in which a constant voltage of 0.1 V to 7.0 V is applied to the anodes and cathodes at a current density in the range of 5.0 A / m 2 up to 300.0 A / m 2 , the residence time in which depends on the thickness of the resulting cathode. Thus, the process allows to obtain copper cathodes or sheets of copper citrate. The depleted electrolyte, that is, the electrolyte remaining after electrodeposition, can also be reused together with the leaching agent described above to irrigate the leach stacks in order to thereby increase the concentration of dissolved copper.
С. C. Recycling of leach piles. At this stage, metals can be extracted from ore that has already undergone heap leaching by wet milling using the previously described leaching agent and mechanically mixing for a certain time, depending on the leaching kinetics of each mineral. In this case, pulp is formed, which allows leaching of the mineral base. After filtering, on the one hand, additional copper liquor can be obtained from it, and on the other hand, noble metals (gold, silver and platinum) can be extracted, as well as copper sulfides that can still be present, using enrichment and flotation processes.
Preparation of carburizing copper. An additional stage, carried out after processing the leaching stacks, in which the obtained copper citrate is fed to the storage tank, iron +1 is added therein in the form of pure scrap. This element acts as a catalyst, attracting dissolved copper ions. After a residence time, which depends on the concentration of copper citrate and on the surface area of contact with iron +1, it is possible to obtain cementitious or precipitated copper of high purity (with a copper content of more than 75%).
