The invention relates to electronic equipment, namely to metal-porous cathodes of microwave electronic devices - traveling wave tubes (TWT) and backward wave tubes (BWT), as well as methods for manufacturing their cathodes. It can be used to increase and ensure stable emission ability of metal-porous cathodes.
There are various designs of metal-porous cathodes [Oxide cathode, under. ed. B.M. Tsareva. Publishing House of Foreign Literature, 1957; Kudintseva G.A. and other thermionic cathodes. Energy, 1966], consisting of a porous tungsten sponge impregnated with an active emission substance.
Also known are metal-porous cathodes [RU patents for inventions No. 2064204, 2285973, 2338291, RU patent for utility model No. 72096], comprising a housing made of refractory metal in which a tungsten sponge impregnated with an active emitting substance is located with an emitting surface.
The closest analogue of the inventive metal-porous cathode is a cathode [RU patent for the invention No. 2172997] containing a core of refractory metal and a matrix, the pores of which are filled with an emitting composition.
There are various methods for the manufacture of metal-porous cathodes for electronic devices [RU patents for inventions No. 2012944, 2064204, 2293394, 2293395, 2297068, 2333565], including the manufacture of a porous tungsten sponge and impregnation of its active substance.
There is also known a method of manufacturing a metal-porous cathode [copyright certificate SU for invention No. 507902], in which a porous preform is produced by hot pressing powders of refractory metals, for example tungsten, in a graphite mold followed by its impregnation with an emission substance, for example, alkaline earth metal aluminates. The surface of the cathode is treated by chemical etching in hydrochloric acid.
However, the chemical etching used in this method leads to hydration and to a change in the necessary state of the active substance in the pores of the preform, as well as to uncontrolled contamination of the cathode by foreign substances.
There are also known methods of manufacturing a metalloporous thermocathode [copyright certificate SU for invention No. 679001], including the operation of manufacturing a sponge of refractory metal with pores filled with the active substance. The metal-porous cathodes undergo a machining operation during the manufacturing process, in which the cathode sponge impregnated with the active substance is treated with a cutter to form a given assembly configuration. Due to the machining of the metal-porous cathode, the emitter surface structure is destroyed - rolling of the surface pores.
д.There are several ways to treat the emitting surface in order to open the sealed pores. Such methods include chemical etching, electrochemical polishing, recrystallization annealing, ion etching, plasma treatment, etc.
The disadvantages of the above methods is the difficulty of controlling the uniformity of the processing of the emitting surface of the cathode, which affects the design of the cathode and does not guarantee stable emission activity. In addition, these methods of manufacturing a metalloporous cathode are time consuming.
There is also known a method of manufacturing a metal-porous cathode [RU patent No. 2074445], which includes the production of a given topology of emitting and non-emitting surface areas, impregnation of the porous matrix with a molten emission composition, subsequent removal of the excess emission composition frozen on non-emitting surfaces and control removal.
The main problem in the technology of such cathodes is to ensure clear boundaries between the emitting and non-emitting surfaces. This is what sets the boundaries of the electron flow in the device. The emitting substance should be completely absent on the details of the cathode-heating unit adjacent to the emitting surface. The objective of the invention, solved by the technology of this patent, was to improve the emission contrast of emitting and non-emitting cathode surfaces and to increase labor productivity in the case of manufacturing a cathode-heating unit with small (less than 1 mm) holes. After the manufacture of emitting and non-emitting sections of the surface of a given geometry, the porous matrix was impregnated with a molten emission composition. Then, the excess of the emission composition frozen on non-emitting surfaces was removed and the degree of removal was monitored. The working surface of the cathode is treated by means of pulses of laser radiation due to local evaporation of the material.
The closest analogue of the proposed method is a method of manufacturing a metal-porous cathode [Li IP, Ruhlyada N.Ya. Creation of surface structures with desired properties using concentrated particle flows // Physics and Chemistry of Materials Processing. 2005. No. 1.], including the manufacture of a body of refractory metal and a tungsten sponge, impregnation of the latter with an active substance, machining and opening of sealed pores. Opening of the sealed pores is carried out by plasma treatment of the cathode surface layer with a powerful short pulse of argon ions. As a result of this treatment, the surface layer is melted, and a mesh or cellular structure is formed in it, which is firmly fused with the cathode matrix.
The disadvantage of this method is the complexity of its implementation, high energy consumption and the need to comply with a number of specified parameter values to obtain a result, such as pressure in the discharge chamber and discharge current.
The objective of the claimed device is to develop the design of a thermionic cathode with the highest possible identical geometric and technical characteristics of all local fragments on the emitting surface of the cathode — the geometry of the microholes and the distances between them.
The objective of the proposed method is the creation of technology to ensure the identity of the geometry of local fragments on the emitting surface of the cathode to create uniform emission stable for a long time.
The essence of the claimed invention (cathode construction) is that in a metal-porous cathode made in the form of a body of refractory metal, in the end part of which is immersed with an active substance and coated with a layer of platinum group metal on the outside with a tungsten sponge, and microholes are distributed over its outer surface, the latter are identical, the dimensions of the microholes and the distance are subject to the following relationships:
d/1=0.1÷1,d / 1 = 0.1 ÷ 1,
h/d=0.15÷10,h / d = 0.15 ÷ 10,
где d - диаметр микроотверстий, мкм;where d is the diameter of the micro holes, microns;
h - глубина микроотверстий, мкм;h is the depth of the microholes, microns;
1 - the distance between the centers of the microholes, microns.
The essence of the proposed method lies in the fact that in the manufacture of a metal-porous cathode, which includes forming a body of refractory metal and a tungsten sponge, impregnating the latter with the active substance and fixing it in the body, machining the emitting surface of the cathode with the subsequent opening of the sealed pores, the latter is made using the pulse direction laser radiation on the emitting surface to ensure the formation of micro-holes evenly distributed over it, while the waves of pulsed laser radiation and the depth of the specified microholes are subordinated to each other by the ratio:
λ/h=0.009÷0.13 для ультрафиолетовой области излучения,λ / h = 0.009 ÷ 0.13 for the ultraviolet region of radiation,
λ/h=0.019÷0.26 для диапазона видимого излучения,λ / h = 0.019 ÷ 0.26 for the range of visible radiation,
λ/h=0.039÷0.84 для инфракрасного излучения,λ / h = 0.039 ÷ 0.84 for infrared radiation,
где λ - рабочая длина волны импульсного лазерного излучения, мкм;where λ is the working wavelength of the pulsed laser radiation, microns;
h - глубина микроотверстий, мкм,h is the depth of the microholes, microns,
после чего наносят на эмиттирующую поверхность слой металла платиновой группы и осуществляют термическую обработку эмиттирующей поверхности катода.then a platinum group metal layer is applied to the emitting surface and the cathode emitting surface is heat treated.
The technical result of the proposed device. A uniform distribution of microholes along the emitting surface of the cathode in all directions and making them identical in size can increase the yield of the active substance and, therefore, improve the technical characteristics of the entire cathode structure as a whole. The implementation of micro-holes with a given size and distance between them allows you to provide the best emissivity of the cathode. With too small apertures, the amount of active substance may not be sufficient for the cathode to work, with large sizes, the active substance intensively evaporates, condensing on other parts, which reduces the service life of the metal-porous cathode.
Для сравнения при плазменной обработке способ длится 6-7 часов (на 19 катодов одновременно).The technical result of the proposed method is to simplify the technology and reduce the time of the cathode manufacturing process. In comparison with the closest analogue, this method of processing the cathode surface repeatedly reduces the process time to 16 seconds (and, together with welding and adjustment, up to 1 min per cathode). For comparison, during plasma processing, the method lasts 6-7 hours (for 19 cathodes at a time).
In addition, this method improves the quality of manufactured products, because it allows you to get completely identical in configuration end cathodes with a flat or spherical surface with unambiguous preservation of the necessary geometric dimensions of the constituent elements that affect the optics of the cathode-gun unit. Therefore, the method provides the manufacture of cathodes with stable and uniform beam emission and minimizing spurious emission.
The proposed method allows to carry out a predetermined size processing of the emitting surface of the cathode in an automated mode, taking into account the radius of curvature of the emitting surface of the spherical shape of the cathode and with high repeatability of the results. The method has advantages in economic, technological parameters with low cost of the installation used.
The invention is illustrated using Fig.1-2, which depict: Fig.1 is a General view of a metal-porous cathode, Fig.2 is an emitting surface of a metal-porous cathode obtained by the method claimed in this application. In figure 1-2, the positions 1-4 are indicated:

The metal-porous cathode is made in the form of a housing 1 of refractory metal. The tungsten sponge 2, having an emitting surface 3, is immersed in the end part of the housing 1 and is impregnated with the active substance and coated on the outside with a layer of platinum group metal.

A platinum group metal layer 3 is applied to the emitting surface. Complete the formation of the cathode by heat treatment of its emitting surface 3 by calcining to degass and remove impurities. To process the emitting surface 3 of a spherical shape, the formation of

где Δf- протяженность цилиндрического участка сфокусированного лазерного луча в зоне его перетяжки при постоянном диаметре пятна, мм,where Δf is the length of the cylindrical section of the focused laser beam in the zone of its constriction with a constant spot diameter, mm,
Δr - максимальная величина радиуса кривизны эмиттирующей поверхности 3 сферической формы, мм.Δr is the maximum radius of curvature of the emitting surface 3 of a spherical shape, mm
ПримерExample
A spherical metal-porous cathode was manufactured with an emitter diameter of 2.8 mm and a radius of curvature of the emitting surface of the cathode of 0.15 mm.
After machining, the cathode was rigidly fixed on a stand, placed in a glass flask, and air was pumped out to a pressure of 1.3 Pa (1 × 10 -2 mm Hg) in order to avoid oxidation of the surface of the metal-porous cathode. We conducted the processing of the emitting surface of the metal-porous cathode by pulsed laser radiation using a computer program taking into account the specified radius of curvature of the cathode with the formation of micro-holes uniformly distributed over the emitting surface of the cathode.
This cathode is made using a pulsed radiation source - a solid-state laser with a working wavelength of 1.06 μm.
The specific ratios in this example were provided as follows: d / 1 = 0.75, h / d = 0.4, λ / h = 0.18, where the working wavelength of the pulsed laser radiation was λ = 1.06 μm, the diameter of the microholes d = 14.75 μm, the distance between the centers of the microholes 1 = 19.7 μm, the depth of the microholes h = 5.9 μm.
The pulsed laser radiation was focused on the emitting surface of the metal-porous cathode so that the waist of the laser beam in the focusing zone formed a cylindrical tube along the entire depth of the emitting surface of the cathode, i.e. the length of the cylindrical portion of the focused laser beam in the waist zone with a constant spot diameter Δf = 1 mm, which is greater than the maximum radius of curvature of the emitting surface of a spherical shape Δr = 0.15 mm.
Then, the emitting surface of the cathode was coated with a metal layer of a platinum group. They made a heat treatment of the emitting surface of the metal-porous cathode, removing organic impurities.
