Abstract
Description
The invention relates to field-effect converters and can preferably be used as a cold generator, for example, in refrigeration units.
[1].Known thermoelectric Peltier, containing two conductors in contact and having different Fermi energy of electrons. Moreover, while passing a current between the first and second conductors, electrons with a low Fermi energy of the first electrode transfer to the second electrode having a high Fermi energy, then the vibrational energy of the lattice of the second conductor is consumed to restore the equilibrium distribution, as a result of which it is cooled [1].
This device is selected as a prototype of the proposed solution.
The main disadvantage of the described device is its low thermal efficiency associated with direct contact of the first and second conductors.
The technical result of the invention is to increase the efficiency of thermoelectric transformations, and primarily to increase the cooling efficiency of the anode.
The specified technical result is achieved in that in a device for heat generation or absorption containing a cathode and anode having different electron Fermi energy and connected to a voltage source, the cathode and anode are located with a gap between each other, the electron Fermi energy at the cathode is less than at the anode while the cathode includes needle electrodes. In a preferred embodiment, the gap between the cathode and the anode is evacuated, the needle electrodes are made in the form of carbon nanotubes, their diameters d are much smaller than the length f, the distance between them b is greater than f, and the gap between the cathode and the anode L is much larger than f, while the anode can be connected to the heat carrier.
There are options in which the cathode and anode are fixed in an electrically insulating casing or an electrical insulator is located between them, for example, in the form of point supports.
Figure 1 shows a General view of the proposed device.
Figure 2 - case version of the device.
In Fig.3, Fig.4 is a variant of the device with point supports.
Анод 3 должен иметь гладкую поверхность 12 для его возможного подсоединения к теплоносителю (не показан).A device for generating or absorbing heat comprises a cathode 1, including needle electrodes 2, as well as an anode 3. Between the cathode 1 and anode 3 there is an electric insulator 4 forming a cavity 5, which can be evacuated. This is done by gluing the finished product in a vacuum chamber, for example, with UHU PLUS glue. The cathode 1 can be made of a conductive substrate 6 (silicon or metal) with needle electrodes 2, made, for example, in the form of carbon nanotubes 7 with a metal layer 8. A necessary condition is a different Fermi energy F of the cathode and anode. Anode 3 is expediently made from copper having high thermal conductivity. But since copper has a low Fermi energy of electrons, the anode on the cathode side can be coated with a
There is an option in which the
There is also an option in which the electrical insulator between the
An embodiment of the point supports in the form of ceramic pins 22 (Fig. 4) located in the
If the thicknesses of electrical and thermal insulators are of the order of 100 microns, the material for their manufacture can be polycor, glass, etc. If the gap between the cathode and anode is of the order of 10 μm, then it is advisable to use film materials such as polyimide, fluoroplast, etc. as heat insulators.
The device operates as follows. Between the cathode 1 and the anode 3 create a potential difference U of the order of several volts. As a result of this, field (field-by-electron) emission of electrons from the cathode 1 (needle electrodes) takes place and their transition to the anode 3. If the Fermi energy of the cathode electrons Фc is less than the Fermi energy of the anode Фа electrons, then the energy of the anode crystal lattice is consumed to restore the equilibrium distribution causing it to cool. In the event that Фк exceeds Фа, the anode will additionally heat up.
The cooling process of the anode and the conditions providing it are described in detail as follows.
The relative heat dissipation in the anode, depending on the applied voltage U will vary according to the law:
где q - дополнительное тепловыделение или теплопоглощение Q=IU, I - ток в цепи,where q is the additional heat or heat absorption Q = IU, I is the current in the circuit,
Fermi energy of the cathode and anode.
При нагревании анода q>0, при охлаждении - q<0.From formula (1) it follows that overheating or cooling of the anode is possible depending on the ratio of the Fermi energies of the electrodes, and only in the frequent case of the manufacture of electrodes from the same materials Фк-Фа = 0 and heat dissipation will be classical. When the anode is heated, q> 0, and when cooled, q <0.
We formulate the necessary criteria for observing the anode cooling effect. For the emergence of the field emission mode, the applied voltage U must exceed the largest of the work functions of the electrons of the cathode and anode.
For most known materials, the applied voltage U should be at least 5-6 V. Moreover, the voltage U should not exceed the difference of the Fermi energies of the electrons of the electrode pair, so that the inequality
(Фа/Фк)/eU>1.(Fa / FC) / eU> 1.
Otherwise, the electrons between the cathode and the anode will acquire such energy that cooling of the anode will cease.
5-6 eV.In this case, the Fermi energy difference should exceed 5-6 eV.
If needle electrodes with a large aspect ratio (the ratio of the length f to the diameter d) are used as cathodes, then the electric field according to [5] will be determined by the formula:
E=U/d,E = U / d
где d диаметр игольчатых электродов.where d is the diameter of the needle electrodes.
In this case, the following inequality must be satisfied:
d<<L,d << L,
где L - межэлектродный зазор.where L is the interelectrode gap.
For the average distance between the needle electrodes on the cathode b, the relation:
b>f.b> f.
In this case, the electric field does not depend on the magnitude of the interelectrode gap L. If the applied voltage U is at least 6 V, then the radius of the tip R of the needle electrodes should not exceed 15 nm so that acceptable fields (E ~ 10 6 V / cm) are provided to ensure the field current.
Consider a specific example. For the anode from graphite, the electron work function according to [3] is 4.7 eV, and the expected Fermi energy will be at least 20 eV [4]. If there is a cathode made of vertically standing carbon nanotubes with nickel tips with a tip radius R of not more than 15 nm. The expected Fermi energy will be 11.7 eV, and the expected electron work function is 4.5 eV. In this case
q/Q=1-8,3/U, где 8,3V>U>5,2V.q / Q = 1-8.3 / U, where 8.3V> U> 5.2V.
к. мало Q.The “cold” production coefficient of the proposed device can be up to 60% of the consumed electric energy, and for a Peltier element this value does not exceed 20%. This process is described in more detail in [6]. Moreover, the higher the cooling efficiency, the lower the absolute value of the cooling power, because little Q.
Thus, the proposed device can be used as elements of refrigerators, as well as in the form of heat shields in vacuum installations and space.
