Abstract
Description
The invention relates to the technology of electromagnetic separation of isotopes of chemical elements, and more specifically to electromagnetic separation of isotopes of samarium.
The invention can be most effectively used for industrial electromagnetic separation of stable isotopes of samarium: samarium-144, samarium-147, samarium-148, samarium-149, samarium-150, samarium-152, samarium-154.
A known method for the separation of isotopes of chemical elements used for industrial electromagnetic separation of isotopes, which involves heating the crucible with the working substance and the gas discharge chamber by heat radiation from heaters of the active resistance to form steam of the working substance, ionization of the vapor molecules in the gas discharge chamber from which ions are extracted and formed into ion a beam separated and focused by a magnetic field in accordance with the mass of isotopes and captured by the receiver boxes (N.A. Kashcheev., V.A. De Rgachev, "Electromagnetic Isotope Separation and Isotope Analysis", M., Energoatomizdat, 1989).
One of the disadvantages of this method is that it is not effective enough for the separation of rare earth elements when their compounds with halogens are used as the working substance.
1) наличием режимов с низкочастотными колебаниями тока и напряжения дугового разряда, вызывающими ухудшение фокусировки;
2) частыми пробоями и паразитными переменными токовыми утечками между электродами ионно-оптической системы или между электродами и корпусом оборудования;
A disadvantage of the known method for the separation of samarium isotopes in an electromagnetic separator using an ion source is that the technical result is unsatisfactory due to the low productivity of the method and obtaining a low enrichment of the captured isotopes. This is caused by prolonged degassing of the working substance due to its hygroscopicity, as well as the instability of the source, due to the following factors:
1) the presence of modes with low-frequency fluctuations in current and voltage of the arc discharge, causing a deterioration in focusing;
2) frequent breakdowns and stray alternating current leaks between the electrodes of the ion-optical system or between the electrodes and the equipment case;
3) the need for frequent tuning to operating modes due to the short operating time of sources.
Another disadvantage of this method is the high chemical activity of samarium trichloride, reacting with structural materials, requiring the use of additional measures to protect them.
The technical result of the invention is improving focus, increasing the enrichment of the separated samarium isotopes and increasing the performance of the electromagnetic separation method.
This goal is achieved by the fact that metal samarium is used as the working substance. This working substance is not hygroscopic, does not react with structural materials of the source, generates vapor pressure sufficient to maintain stable combustion of the discharge arc in the temperature range 900 - 1000 o C, and ensures stable operation of the source.

To explain the invention, an example of a method for separating samarium isotopes in an electromagnetic separator using an ion source is presented below. For the experiment, one of the separation chambers of the SU-20 electromagnetic separator of the Elektrokhimpribor combine, the city of Lesnoy, Sverdlovsk Region, was used. A portion of metallic samarium was placed in the crucible of the ion source. After installing the source and the seven-box receiver in the separation chamber of the separator, the chamber was pumped out with vacuum pumps to a pressure of (0.7 - 1.5) • 10 -3 Pa and a high-voltage source training to a voltage of 31-32 kV.
In order to obtain an electron beam in the gas discharge chamber of the source, voltages were applied to the cathode block, providing: current through the filament - 65 - 70 A, voltage between the filament and thermal cathode - 0.8 - 1.0 kV, emission current - 0.5 - 0 , 6 A. At an arc discharge current of 0.8 - 1.5 A and a discharge voltage of 150 - 250 V, the vaporization of the working substance was carried out, the formation of which occurred at a heater power of 1300 - 1500 W.
Using the ion-optical system, the resulting samarium ions were pulled out through the slit of the gas discharge chamber and formed into an ion beam, which, under the action of an accelerating voltage and a constant magnetic field of 3000 Oe, was divided into seven ion isotope beams in the chamber in accordance with the ion masses. These isotope beams were focused by a magnetic field in the focal plane in which the entrances to the receiver boxes were placed.
After accumulation, the receivers were removed from the separation chamber, the isotopes from the boxes were removed by the method of anodic etching, the resulting isotope-enriched solution was analyzed for enrichment and processed to the final product.
