Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a technology for the formation of protective coatings in gas-discharge devices.
The claimed invention can be used for the manufacture of thin-film protective coatings on the dielectric layer in plasma panels (PDP-Plasma Display Panel) AC.
PDP and other gas discharge devices use a MgO thin film coating applied to the dielectric layer. This coating has two functions:
- protection of the dielectric from ion bombardment due to negligible sputtering of MgO in a low temperature gas discharge plasma,
- lowering the plasma ignition voltage due to the high emission coefficient of secondary electrons.
96%.PDP sizes up to 40 inches diagonally are already in production. In the PDP technology, vacuum deposition of an MgO film is usually used [1]. With this technology, a thin (0.3-0.5 μm) MgO film is formed with a smooth surface and acceptable performance characteristics:
- longevity of more than 10,000 hours,
- ignition voltage up to 250 V,
- optical transparency up to 96%.
However, vacuum methods of electron beam sputtering and magnetron sputtering are very inefficient, 5 to 30 wafers per day. Despite the fact that the cost of one unit of vacuum equipment is in the range of 2 - 10 million US dollars. Therefore, the transition to mass production of PDP with such technology is not attractive.
An incomparably cheaper technology is the formation of a MgO protective coating by applying MgO paste using mask printing technology followed by firing [2]. The paste contains MgO particles with sizes in the range of 0.2 - 0.5 microns. The protective coating obtained by this technology has a rough surface. The roughness leads to the presence of sharp peaks, angles and ribs that facilitate the emission of secondary electrons, thereby lowering the ignition voltage and increasing the stability of the plasma combustion.
However, some part of the dielectric surface with the required thickness of the protective coating of ~ 0.3-0.5 μm is exposed due to the fact that the coating is a layer of fine MgO powder particles and there are gaps or channels through which bombarding ions can reach the dielectric surface and spray its atoms. As a result, the ignition voltage is significantly increased and the device goes beyond the range of operating characteristics, which is equivalent to its failure.
The probability of direct ion bombardment of the dielectric surface can be significantly reduced by increasing the thickness of the protective coating to 2 μm [2], ie multistory layering of MgO powder particles, which turns the channels into an impassable labyrinth for rectilinear ion trajectories. But at the same time, the optical transparency of the protective coating is unacceptably reduced.
[3].The closest in technical essence is a way to reduce the passage of channels with a slight increase in the thickness of the protective coating by forming it in two operations:
- the formation of the first layer of MgO particles,
- the formation of a second layer of MgO particles with the addition of barium and gadolinium oxides [3].
In the second application step, the gaps between the MgO particles from the first operation are filled with small MgO particles with the addition of barium and gadolinium oxides from the second operation and impassable labyrinth channels are formed. In this case, the developed surface of the protective layer and the required durability of the device are retained.
PDP. However, due to the discontinuity of the film, its transparency is less than 85%, which does not allow the use of such a coating on the inner surface of the front PDP glass facing the viewer. In addition, the implementation of the additional operation of forming the second layer actually doubles the cost of the technology of forming the protective layer, which is not attractive for mass production of PDP.
10-15%.Objectives of the alleged invention:
1. an increase in the optical transparency of the protective coating up to 90%,
2. minimizing the cost of the technology of forming a protective coating,
3. increasing the efficiency of the glow of the device by 10-15%.
To solve the tasks, a method for forming a protective coating in a gas discharge device is proposed, which consists in applying a layer of material forming an MgO film on the protected surface during its subsequent firing, characterized in that a magnesium-ion-containing electrolyte in an organic solvent is used as the applied material.
90%.Task 1 is achieved by using not a paste with a finished MgO powder, but a liquid electrolyte containing Mg ++ , H + , CH 3 , COO - , OH - , NO 3 - , Cl - ions in an organic solvent. During the heat treatment of such an electrolyte deposited on the surface of the dielectric, a thin film of MgO protective coating is formed with a thickness of up to 0.5 μm and optical transparency of up to 90%.
Task 2 is achieved by the fact that the electrolyte is applied to the surface of the dielectric with a cheap and productive technology (spreading, dipping, spraying ...) in one operation with subsequent firing, i.e. only one layer of protective coating is formed.
Task 3 is achieved in that the protective coating has a very developed surface due to the formation of MgO in different temperature ranges corresponding to the evolution of gaseous: first, CO 2 , then Cl 2 and, finally, NO 3 , which causes the formation of tortuous microcracks along the surface of the coating, so and deep into it, which nevertheless, due to the developed tortuosity, form microchannels-labyrinths impassable for ions flying along rectilinear paths of ions.
It is known that the efficiency of the glow of gas-discharge devices depends on the composition of the working gas and the perfection of the phosphor, as well as partly on the design of the glow cells. From the level of science and technology, the possibility of increasing the efficiency of the luminescence of gas-discharge devices only due to the special formation of a very thin (up to 0.5 μm) protective coating film is not known, especially when it comes to a tangible increase in efficiency in excess of 10%, while at the same time significantly reducing the cost technology for the formation of this coating.
The invention is illustrated by specific examples.

C - MgCl 2 • 6H 2 O
in weight ratios:
1. A: B: C = 10: 5: 1
2. A: B: C = 10: 3: 2
3. A: B: C = 10: 1: 3
dissolution in an organic solvent comprising up to 95% by weight.
4 PDPs were manufactured with planar sizes of the luminescent cells 1.2 by 0.4 mm 2 and the interelectrode distance of 60 μm. On the surface of the dielectrics of the windshields, electrolytes were deposited with the above ratios of the components, respectively: I-1, II-2, III-3. Then they were subjected to heat treatment in the following mode: increasing the temperature from room temperature to 450 o C for 1 hour, holding at this temperature for 20 minutes and lowering the temperature to room temperature for 1 hour. A MgO film was deposited on the PDP-IY front glass according to standard electron beam spraying technology. The results were obtained at a pulse frequency of a supporting voltage of 60 kHz, given in the table).
The data of the test results show that the protective coating according to the claimed invention in comparison with the protective coating formed by standard electron beam spraying, gives:
- brightness increase of more than 10%
- increase in luminosity by more than 10%
- comparable durability.
The ignition voltage exceeds ~ 13%. However, this drawback is easily eliminated by reducing the interelectrode distance to 50 μm, which is not difficult at the current level of development of photolithographic technology.
