Заготовку древесины по предложенному способу начинают с того, что стволы деревьев 1, предназначенных к валке, клеймят специальными метками 2, например, отражающими свет. После срезания и повала деревьев (метками вверх), обрезки сучьев, раскряжевки стволов на сортименты 3 вызывают воздушное транспортное средство, например, вертолет 4. На борту вертолета 4 установлена система обнаружения 5 (например, оптический импульсный источник света и фотоприемник), воспринимающая отраженный сигнал от метки 2. При движении вертолета, по величине поступающих на его борт сигналов, определяют координаты спиленных и лежащих на земле деревьев с метками.
