Abstract
Description
The invention relates to methods for controlling the quality of steel and can be used in metallurgical plants producing rails.
It is known that the service life of rails is largely determined by the resistance of the rails to the formation of contact fatigue defects, the cause of which are accumulations of oxide inclusions.
A known method for determining the resistance of rails to the formation of contact fatigue defects by testing on a 9-position machine the design of VNIIPP with the pure rolling of four balls on a flat sample cut from the top layer of the rail head. However, the method is characterized by considerable complexity and duration of determination.
Closest to the invention in technical essence is a method for determining the resistance of rails to the formation of contact fatigue defects by ultrasonic monitoring of rail contamination by accumulations of non-metallic inclusions. However, the method is not sufficiently reliable since, with the ultrasonic method of monitoring accumulations of non-metallic inclusions, macrostructure defects can be accepted. In addition, the method requires special measures to stabilize the acoustic connection, which makes it difficult to implement in the mass production of rails at a metallurgical plant.
The purpose of the invention is to increase the accuracy of determining the resistance of rails to the formation of contact-fatigue defects.
This goal is achieved by measuring the amount of oxygen released from the sample of the studied rail in the temperature range 1700-1950 K when it is continuously heated in a graphite crucible, the resistance of the rails to the formation of contact-fatigue defects is determined by comparing the measured amount of oxygen with the amount of oxygen released in the same temperature range from a reference sample, with a known resistance to the formation of contact-fatigue defects. The greater the thermodynamic strength of the oxide, the higher the temperature when it is reduced by carbon to form carbon monoxide. The most harmful non-metallic inclusions, near which crack nucleation occurs, are restored in the temperature range 1700-1950K, therefore, measuring the amount of oxygen released in this temperature range characterizes the resistance of rails to the formation of contact-fatigue defects.
The proposed method is as follows.
A metal sample is cut from a rail steel sample for fractional gas analysis by hot extraction in a carrier gas stream. In the process of analysis, the amount of oxygen released in the temperature range of 1700-1950 K is recorded. The measured amount of oxygen is compared with the amount of oxygen released from the rail sample of a similar production method with a known reference resistance.
The results of a series of analyzes of metal samples taken from rails with known operational stability are shown in the table.
