A method of extracting sulfur from a gas containing hydrogen sulfide, comprising i) oxidizing part of the hydrogen sulfide in the gas stream with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas in the oxidation step to sulfur dioxide, ii) reacting the gas obtained in the oxidation step in at least two catalytic stages, in accordance with with Klaus reaction:
2H 2 S + SO 2 -> 2H 2 O + 3 / n S n
with the formation of a gaseous mixture containing less than 1.2 vol. % H 2 S, iii) catalytic reduction of SO 2 in the gas leaving the last of the at least two catalytic stages, this catalytic reduction taking place in the catalyst bed located after the last catalytic stage of the Klaus process, iv) selective oxidation of hydrogen sulfide in the gas obtained in stage iii) to elemental sulfur in a dry oxidation layer and removing elemental sulfur from the gas obtained in this stage.
