Abstract
Description

A fig.
Description of the invention
The present invention relates to improvements introduced in cartonboard cartons, commonly used for the packaging and sale of fresh produce, such as fruit and vegetables.
It will be recalled that such platforms have a bottom, two longitudinal walls, two transverse walls with a height greater than that of the longitudinal walls and two horizontal entablatures extending parallel to the bottom, above it, from the upper edge of the transverse walls salts. These entablatures are thus raised in relation to the longitudinal walls and thus enable stacking of these without deterioration of the products they contain, as well as a ventilation thereof.
Following the description, we will designate each of the end portions of the platform which comprises end the entablatures. t
When transporting and exposing the filled plywood plates and stacked, the plywood heads are subjected to compression forces. In addition to a certain threshold, which of course depends on the position of the platform on the stack, the density of the packaged products and their degree of humidity, the transverse walls of the platforms run the risk of bending by pressure or softening losing its resistance. In addition, during transport from the production sites to the post offices
*
. the stacks of work platforms are subject to "repeated and sudden shocks, which

even more the resistance of the heads of the platforms.
In order to improve the strength of the platforms and their resistance to stacking, it is certain that we can use a more resistant material than the card, but then we will have relatively expensive platforms, which necessarily means an increase in the selling price of the "
It was therefore proposed in patent application FRAR N and Cs. 2 267 95 is a fruit platform which, when planed, comprises a bottom extending at each of its longitudinal ends by a flap in which plates are formed, prior to the platform frame, to form the two transverse walls of the platform . These plates are made of a relatively rigid material, for example of wood, particle board or double faced corrugated board. The bonding of the two plates before the pallet frame introduces an obvious delay in the manufacturing cycle and decreases the production yield.
According to another known process, platforms of the type considered are introduced by inserting into the head of the pallets, after their frame, a plurality of corrugated reinforcement plates having the same surface as the inner faces of the transverse walls and which are applied against the latter. Thus bent, the transverse walls should have a greater resistance to stacking, but in reality there is practically no improvement in the resistance, since upon insertion into the heads, the plates deform slightly along their peri-canic edge. Thus, until a given compression effort, only the transverse walls of the platform participate in stacking resistance. In most cases, this effort is greater than the pressure-bending stress of the transverse walls,
at

The transverse walls are already deformed.
Ά At this time, the weight of the platforms on the stack
supported only by the reinforcing plates which end in turn by flexing. Thus, it was necessary to add its strength to give a double resistance of the platform to the stack

which is cut away and grooved to form a bottom, two longitudinal walls, two transverse walls with a larger wall than that of the longitudinal walls and terminating, at one end, by two corner edges, and two horizontal entablatures, extend parallel to the bottom from the upper edge of the transverse walls, said process being characterized in that it consists in placing the planned carton in a same plane, in a position perpendicular to the plate, along the fold lines of the transverse walls in the bottom, two small reinforcement plates having a surface slightly larger than the inner section of the platform heads, then successively fold around the reinforcement plates the transverse walls, entablatures and corner folds to place them in their position normal, the reinforcing plates being then opened
'4'
along its peripheral edge between the flanks retracting the fold lines.
Thus, for the fastening of the reinforcement plates, it is well known that in a fold line the carton is reduced to a very small thickness, so that when the 90 ° carton is folded, the lateral flanks of the fold line are practically applied one over the other. This allows to use reinforcing plates with a larger surface area than the inner section of the deck heads, since the edges of the reinforcement plates can be accommodated between the reentrant flanks of the fold lines. This result is unexpected since, at first glance, there would be a tendency to use surface reinforcement plates smaller or at most equal to the inner section of the platform heads.
In an advantageous variant embodiment of the present invention, the initial carton blank is cut into sheets of thickness substantially equal to that of the reinforcement plates and the platform is assembled as above. In this case, likewise the peripheral edge of the reinforcement plates is engaged in the grooves, so that we can use reinforcement plpcas with a surface larger than the inner section of the platform heads.
The advantage of the process according to the present invention lies in the fact that the reinforcement plates are placed in place during the actual frame operation of the carton, contrary to the processes cited above, in which the reinforcement plates are introduced after cor_t e. From the outset, the reinforcement plates are applied to the inner face of the transverse walls without risk of deformation, contrary to known processes in which the reinforcement plates are placed only after being mounted to

platform.
Thanks to the method according to the present invention, the reinforcement plates remain by themselves in place, without having to glue them or staple them on the transverse walls of the platform. Furthermore, they precisely duplicate the surface of said walls and thus participate in the stacking resistance, whatever the stresses exerted on the platforms.
The present invention also provides a device for carrying out this process. It is used to stop that purpose a classic device designed for platforms with realiza_ tion heads, for example, that disclosed in French Patent Application N and. 79 02 484, in which some modifications have been introduced to adapt it to the assembly of the plates with reinforced heads.
It will be remembered firstly that the carton mounting device according to this invention comprises a movable equipment which is constituted by two pur. horizontal and parallel sections of the same shape as the inner section of the heads and which are hinged by means of connecting rods in the form of hinged parallelograms on a base which is animated by a linear movement alternating between a top position for which the punches are in contact with the carton to be assembled and a lower position for which the punches are freed from the plate.
As a result of this arrangement, when there is no obstacle in its path, the punches move away from the base and that, while the base continues its vertical movement, the punches move horizontally away from the base, or approaching one from the other according to the position of the obstacle.
-6-
The improvement in accordance with the present invention resides in that in the lower position of the apparatus, the set of punches and connecting rods are in lowered position, there are the outer faces of the punches respectively located exactly under the fold lines of the two transverse walls in the the bottom of the carton and emerging respectively from the outlet openings of two fixed stores for the provision of reinforcing plates, and said vertical faces are provided with gripping means capable of picking up the first reinforcement plate of each store with a view to place it under the folding line of the transverse transverse wall on the bottom of the plate and only to abandon it when the heads of the platform are formed.
The gripping means may for example be constituted by a vacuum source which draws the reinforcing plates through openings made on said outer faces of the punches.
In order for the punches to be placed directly in front of the openings in the magazine, suitable centering means may be provided. In a particular embodiment, the latter comprise at least one insert placed on said outer faces of the punches and which, when properly centered, will engage a complementary cavity made in the reinforcement plates.
The reinforcing plates may be made of any rigid or semi-rigid material, for example corrugated cardboard, flat board, chipboard, countertop, molded plastic material, isorel, etc.
The plates may have extremely valuable shapes. In their simplest embodiment, they have a rectan_guiar shape of dimensions larger than those of the transverse walls of the
the platform eventually having at its edges cutouts corresponding to the cutouts in the heads of the platform. They may also extend in the longitudinal direction po; two lateral flaps intended to be applied against the longitudinal walls of the platform. Such a double dihedral reinforcing plate ensures a greater reinforcement of the platform in the corners of the heads.
Further features and advantages appear in the following description of various embodiments of the reinforcement plates according to the present invention and of a machine for placing these reinforcement plates in place. In this description reference will be made to the accompanying drawings whose figures represent:

FIG. 11 is a partial perspective view of the machine according to the present invention.
Reference is first made to Fig. 3,
which represents a platform for fruit (10), called a platform with heads.
This platform comprises a rectilinear bottom 12, two longitudinal walls 14, two transverse walls 16 terminating at each end by corner bend 18 which become integral with the inner face of the longitudinal walls 14, by glue or stapling, and two raised entablatures (20), contiguous to the transverse walls and forming an advanced part above the bottom and parallel thereto. The entablatures terminate at their ends by flaps (22) which are applied to the carriage folds (18) and are secured, for example by gluing.
In order to improve the resistance of such a shape to the stacking, rectilinear reinforcing plates (24) similar to that shown in Fig. 4.
As explained above, the reinforcement plates 24 are placed perpendicular to the carton 10 when planned (Figure 3), by matching one of its longitudinal edges with the fold lines (26) of the transverse walls ( 16) on the bottom (12). The transverse walls are raised in a recess at the bottom and the corner folds (18) and the entablatures (22) are then folded in order to position them in the position shown in Fig. 1.
As can be seen in fig. 3, the release plate 24 has a width 1 greater than the inner height h of the platform head 28. Likewise, its length is greater than the length of the platform head. Hence, when the carton is folded, the flanks 30 and 32 of the fold lines will tighten the edges of the reinforcement plates, thereby keeping them in position, and

without it being necessary to glue them or staple them on the transverse walls 16.
In the embodiment variant shown in FIG. 4, are printed on the carton along the fold lines surrounding the transverse walls 16, grooves 34 of width substantially equal to the thickness of the thrust plates 24. The edges of the reinforcing plates are fitted into said grooves, so that the reinforcing plates are solidly held in place.
The reinforcing plate 24 of FIG. 5 is straight and can show on its longitudinal edges the same cutouts as the transverse walls 16 of the platform.
The reinforcing plate of Fig. 6 comprises a central portion 24 and two side flaps 36 intended to be applied against the transverse wall 16 and the platform flaps 101, thereby conferring to the platform heads an increased strength.
In the reinforcing plate of Fig. 7, cut-away polyhedron face parts (3 ') are provided between the central portion (24) and the flaps (36). These heads (30 ') are placed obliquely in the corners and thereby ensure an even greater resistance of the heads of this platform.
Referring to Fig. 8, the platform armor machine comprises an apparatus (39) movable vertically and in reciprocating motion under the action of non-represented drive devices. This equipment comprises a horizontal base (40) carrying two identical assemblies of two flat vertical plates (42) and
l
(44) arranged in rows of two.
In each of the plates (42) and (44) the ends of two identical identical connecting rods
-10-
and parallel, respectively 46,48 and 50,52, the other ends of which are hinged in parallelepiped hollow punches 54,56, of a section substantially complementary to that of the inside of the heads of the platform 28, connecting rods (46, 48) intersect with the small connecting rods (50, 52), each of said pairs of rods forming a deformable articular parallelogram. The pivot axes of the small connecting rods on the vertical plates and punches are horizontal and parallel.
In the lower position of the apparatus, the small connecting rods 46, 48, 50 and 52 are horizontally lowered, the outer faces 58 and 60 of the punches a mutual spacing equal to the distance separating the fold lines 26 from the carton 10. In this position, the faces 58 (60) project respectively in the openings of two warehouses (62) and (64) each containing a stack of reinforcing plates (24) in an upright position. Said outer faces 56 and 60 have openings 68 to which, on the inside of the punches, the ends of the nozzles 70 θ (72) are attached to a vacuum source,
As shown in Fig. 11, on the outer faces of the punches are placed centering pads 74 for engaging complementary cutouts 76 on the longitudinal edges of the reinforcement plates 24.
The operation of the machine will now be described: at the beginning of a cycle, the machine is in the state shown in Fig. A planed carton plate (10) is brought into a centered position above the movable equipment (39), with its fold lines facing downwards and is kept immobile in this position by stops not shown

two. The movable equipment 39 is in its lower position to which its punches 54 and 56 are respectively cut out and out of the openings of the stores 62 'and 64. The punches 54 and 56 are correctly centered in front of the opening of the stores thanks to the inserts 74 which engage the cutouts 76. The depression exerted through the holes 68 maintains the first reinforcing plate 24 of each warehouse applied against the adjacent punch.
The mobile equipment (39) then rises in blo_
(46), (4S), (50) and (52) return to their horizontal position starting from that of fig. the punches are connected tangentially to the openings of the warehouses.
The platform can then be withdrawn to give way to another preliminary piece.
FIG. 10 shows a particular embodiment of a supply plate supply store 24. The magazine comprises four horizontal bars (4 4), (5 5), (Ô)) ((90) arranged so that the reinforcing plates can be supported by their cutouts (76). The bars thus retain the reinforcing plates and guide them in their motion towards the opening of the magazine. It is evident that the warehouses may have any other suitable shape.
You will notice that on a stack of platforms full of products, the upper platforms only support a small weight. These platforms can therefore no longer be reinforced. To this end, the platform frame machine may comprise means that put the vacuum source out of service when the platform stack formed has a predetermined number of platforms. From now on, punches no longer pick up the reinforcement plates.
