A fig.

A fig.
A fig.
As únicas alterações necessárias

A fig. 9 representa a fita interior (2o6) planificada antes do enrolamento.
10, antes do enrolamento.
A fig. 1 a 3.
filtro rompe as pontes, permitindo a rotação livre e o ajusta1«
mento.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
With reference to the drawings, Figs. 1 to 3 illustrate one embodiment (10) of the present invention. In general, a tobacco rod (2) is axially abutted against a filter plug (4) to form a cigarette assembly. The tobacco rod may have any conventional length and perimeter. The filter plug comprises filter material, known in the art, and A cigarette paper or shroud (5). Instead of being a normal polycarbonate wrapper of the cap, the paper 5 is not that normal paper but rather a paper for the cigarette tip with a low color impermeability to the air, also known in these techniques .
The filter plug may be of any suitable material known in the art, for example a foam filler having an impermeable outer film. The filter material and the tobacco blend may be chosen so as to provide a desired particle level, as discussed below.
An inner ribbon (6) surrounds the filter plug. The leading edge of this inner ribbon may extend to the abutment line (7) between the filter and the tobacco rod. FIG. 2 illustrates the inner ribbon in its planned configuration, before being wrapped around the filter plug. * T interior tape is formed a peripheral groove separation (8), preferably after the tape has been wound around the tam filter bread, which defines a rotating portion (12), which lies between the groove and A retention zone (14) extending rearwardly towards the mouthpiece of fil4

4. Glue is applied to the underside of the rotary zone (12) to connect the inner ribbon to the filter plug. The retention zone is left free of glue. Glue may also be applied between the longitudinal edges 20 and 20a of the inner ribbon to ensure obtaining a solid joint after winding.
The glue can be of any conventional type, for example glue - hot melt - or polyvinyl acetate (PVA).
An outer ribbon (22) surrounds the cigarette assembly, partially covering the inner ribbon. This tape may be conventional paper of the type used on cigarette ends, known in these techniques. The glue is applied to the underside of the outer edge, defining three longitudinally spaced areas, as best seen in Fig. 3, which illustrates the planed outer belt. An overlap area (2 * +) corresponds to a portion of the outer ribbon in contact with the tobacco rod; this area receives an application of glue, which unites the tobacco rod. An immobilization area (26) extends rearwardly from the overlapping area and overlaps the rotational zone (12) of the inner ribbon. Glue is not applied in this area. A connecting area (28) extends rearwardly from the locking area. It constitutes the portion of the outer ribbon which overlies the retention zone (lk) of the inner ribbon and receives an application of glue to join it to that region. Glue can also be applied between the edges 30 and 30a to form a complete gasket when the outer ribbon is wrapped around the cigarette assembly.
When the complete cigarette is assembled, the rotatable portion (12) of the inner ribbon is attached to the filter plug (4) to form a first unit. The retention zone (14) of the inner ribbon is attached to the outer ribbon (22) to form a second unit, which is attached to the tobacco rod (2), the filter plug is not
thus connected either to the tobacco rod or the outer tape, and thus to rotate freely. Furthermore, the combined action of the second unit further serves to maintain the axial position of the first unit. On the other hand, the retention zone, which extends rearwardly towards the side of the filter nozzle, maintains the second unit sufficiently firmly to avoid any fluctuation.
Once the inner ribbon and the outer ribbon attached to the cigarette assembly, the first and second dilution openings in the air 32 and q2a are formed in said tapes. These apertures are formed by perforating selectively perforations through one or more ribbons and penetrating the fibrous cap (4). FIG. 1 shows the air dilution openings 32 and 32a located in the retention zone of the inner ribbon, not covered by the outer ribbon. Based on known techniques for obtaining dilution in the air, this position can be adjusted forwardly, so that the apertures are formed through the outer ribbon, the inner ribbon (either in the retention zone or in the rotational zone), and of the filter housing. The apertures may be in the form of grooves or holes. It is preferred that the apertures comprise three grooves, spaced along the periphery of the filter plug, at 120Â ° intervals (Figure 4).
The length of the grooves is chosen so as to provide the degree of dilution in the desired air.
As is known in these techniques, the dilution openings in the air, the filter material and the tobacco blend cooperate to produce a desired level of particle delivery. Using known techniques, those of ordinary skill in the art will understand the manner in which these factors can be weighed to achieve a cigarette having a desired level of particulate matter conbined with
other characteristics of the smoke.
The finished cigarette can be adjusted by the smoker in order to vary the level of the particulate supply. As provided to the consumer, the cigarette is in the conditions of minimum particle delivery, i.e. with maximum dilution in the air, as the dilution aperture (32) through the tape (6) is aligned peripherally with the corresponding aperture 32a through the housing 5 of the filter plug, as shown in FIG. 4. To adjust the dilution in the air, the smoker simply rotates the filter cap. FIG. 4a shows the cigarette after the rotation of the filter with the misaligned openings 32a and 32a and the dilution in the air reduced to about 50 ° degree of dilution in the air thus depends on the degree of alignment of the perforation grooves. An indicator line (34) or other mark may be printed on the filter plug or the inner ribbon retention zone to guide the smoker in the selection of particle supply levels. Preferably, this line extends longitudinally from a rotatable portion to a non-rotatable portion of the cigarette, so that the alignment of the portions indicates alignment of the dilution devices in the air. Those skilled in the art will realize that it is easy to achieve this result in many ways.
A significant advantage of the present invention is the ease of manufacture. Conventionally, the filters are manufactured in one section of a manufacturing operation and are connected to the tobacco rods in the assembly operation. It is not necessary to have this procedure for the assembly of cigarettes with an adjustable filter. The filter may be fabricated in its normal form, a bar long enough to form from there four or six filter plugs cutting off said bar during the assembly operation. The only changes needed
in the process of manufacturing the filters are the replacement of the normal shell of the cap by a different involucro and addition
<X
of a piece of equipment at the outlet end of the bar making machine for the filters. This equipment wraps the required number of inner ribbons (6) around the filter bar. The grooves 8 are preferably made of inner ribbon material after being wrapped around the filter bar.
The application of the adhesive to the rotary zone (12) and to the edge (20) takes place before winding.
The assembly operation of the cigarette is then completely normal. The main difference between the conventional paper application for the cigarette tip and the outer ribbon is the way the outer ribbon is applied to define the overlap area 24, the empty area
(26) and the connecting area (28). The exact dimensions of these areas are chosen based on the manufacturing tolerances in the glue application, as will be apparent to those skilled in the art. It is preferable to use polyvinyl acetate glue instead of hot melt glue for this component. Ei1 »
The dilution openings in air (32) are preferably formed in the assembled cigarette, preferably using a laser punch inserted into the manufacturing line. The size and location of the dilution grooves in the air are controlled by the regulation of the instants of the pulses and the output power of the laser punch.

In Figs. 5-7 is shown a further embodiment of the present invention. The complete cigarette, shown in Fig. 5, generally comprises a tobacco rod (102), with an engaging member and the filler member, axially abutted against a filter plug (104). The filV buffer.
10
is in this case covered by the inner strip (106), which can
be normal paper for the tip of the cigarette or other suitable material.
The inner strip (1θ6) is shown as shown in Fig. 6. This inner ribbon is divided by peripherally spaced apart separating grooves 108 and 109 into three zones: a forward rotational zone 113, which extends from the abutment line 107 between the filter plug and the tobacco bar back to the front separator slot
(108), a rotary zone (112) extending from the rear separating slot (109) to the mouth end of the filter plug (104) and a retention zone (114) which lies between the separating grooves . The adhesive is applied to the front and rear rotating zones to attach such portions of the inner ribbon to the filter plug. Glue may also be applied between the edges (120) and (120a) of the retainer to. form A complete gasket when the inner ribbon is rolled <ξπγ around the filter cap.
The outer ribbon (122) is wound around the assembly
of the cigarette so as to overlap either the tobacco bar or the filter plug but does not fully cover the latter. Before being rolled, glue is applied to the outer ribbon to define four areas (Figure 7). At the front end of the outer ribbon, the overlap area 124 corresponds to a portion of the outer ribbon in contact with the tobacco rod 102 and is bonded by gluing. A leading restraint area 126 extends rearwardly from the overlap area to a distance equal to the width of the forward rotational zone 113 of the inner ribbon to which this area overlaps. Glue is not applied in this area. The attachment area (128) extends rearwardly from the front immobilization area and corresponds to k-
t ing the outer band in contact with the retaining zone (LLK) of the inner band. Apply glue to its underside joining it to the retention zone. The rear immobilizer area 127 does not receive any application of glue and extends rearwardly overlapping the rotating portion 112 of the inner ribbon to a distance chosen to provide stability to the entire cigarette, as will be apparent to those skilled in the art. matter.
Glue may also be applied to the edges 130 and 130a of the securing areas to ensure a complete gasket when the outer ribbon is wound. Conversion glue may be used for bonding both the inner and outer webs, with polyvinyl acetate glue being preferred.
After assembly, the rotating zones 112 and 113 of the inner ribbon are joined to the filter plug 104 to form a first unit. The outer ribbon 122 is attached to the retaining portion 11 'of the inner ribbon to form a second unit which is attached to the tobacco rod 102. Since the first unit is not attached to the tobacco rod in any way, it can rotate freely. The action of the second unit further serves to maintain the axial position of the first unit.
As the retention zones prevent the axial movement of the rotating zones, the first unit is held in its axial position and the portion of the outer ribbon that extends back into contact with the rotational zone (112) of the inner ribbon prevents flow tion.
The dilution openings are formed in air (132) and (132a) through respectively the outer ribbon and the inner ribbon and into the filter plug. Can add-sp A row
(13) or other mark to assist the smoker. In this case also the considerations concerning the position, size and number of the dilution medium in the air shall apply.

As in the case of the first embodiment, the consumer receives the cigarette with adjustable filter with the configuration corresponding to the minimum supply of particles. Adjustment of the smoke force in the main stream by the smoker is achieved by rotating the filter, thereby varying the amount of dilution in the air provided by the dilution devices in the air.
The manufacturing techniques associated with this embodiment differ little from those described above. The inner ribbons (106) are attached to a multiple filter rod by application, on the manufacturing line, of a conventional filter manufacturing device. A further minor adaptation enables the spacer grooves 108 and 109 to be cut into the inner ribbon. The outer ribbon 122 is applied in the assembly operation in the same manner as the paper of the conventional cigarette tip is now applied. To achieve this result, minimal modifications are required in existing cigarette manufacturing devices. Air dilution openings 132 and 132a are made using conventional drilling apparatus introduced into the manufacturing line.
In Figs. 8-10 is another embodiment of the present invention. Again, the cigarette assembly generally comprises a tobacco rod (202) having a conventional filler and housing, axially abutted against a filter (20). The filter, in this embodiment, is fabricated with a conventional tampon wrap (not shown).
The inner ribbon 206 of this embodiment closely resembles the conventional paper used in the tip of the cigarette in that it is dimensioned so as to extend the length of the filter and overlap the tobacco rod.
FIG. 9 shows the inner ribbon (266) planned prior to winding. Glue is applied to the underside of the inner ribbon before wrapping it around the cigarette assembly, defining three zones: A front retention zone (215) θ bonded by glue to the filter and overlaps the abutment (207) between the filter cap and tobacco rod e. extends back over the filter cap. A rear retention zone (plb), also glued to the filter, is in contact with the rear portion of the filter plug. The rotary zone 212 does not receive any application of glue and overlaps the filter plug between the two retention zones. Two peripheral separating ribs (208) are formed in the rotatable zone after the inner ribbon has been wound around the cigarette assembly. Each of the grooves is located within the rotational zone adjacent the separating boundary between said zone and the retention zone, spaced apart by a distance which is determined by the manufacturing tolerances. As can be seen, these grooves are made by apparatuses such as a
laser included in the manufacturing line, adjusted to function "
to be continuous and so that the perforation penetrates but does not extend substantially to the filter plug. Glue may be applied between the edges 220 and 220a to ensure a complete gasket.
The outer ribbon 222 is shown as shown in Fig. 10 before winding. This tape is wound around the cigarette assembly as shown in Fig. 8. Before being rolled, apply glue to the underside of the outer ribbon to define three areas; a connecting area 224 corresponds to a portion of the outer ribbon in contact with the rotational zone of the inner ribbon 212 and glued therebetween. The coverage areas (226) do not receive any glue application and come from each
one of the sides of the adhesive area 224, in contact with the retaining regions 214 and 215 of the inner ribbon. Glue may also be applied between the edges 230 and 230a of the cover areas to ensure a complete seal when the outer wrap is wrapped around the cigarette assembly.
Dilution openings are formed in the air 232 and 232a through the outer tape coverage area and an inner tape retention zone, respectively, which penetrate into the filter cap housing. May be added if an indicator line (34 2), or other tag, to assist the smoker. The foregoing considerations concerning the location, dimensions and formation of the dilution apertures in air are applicable to this embodiment.
After assembly, the retaining regions 214 and 215 of the inner ribbon, connected to the filter plug 204, constitute a first Unit, which is glued to the tobacco rod 202.
The outer ribbon 222, joined to the retention zone 212 of the inner ribbon, constitutes a second unit. Due to the fact that the retention zones prevent axial movement of the retention zone of the inner ribbon, the second unit can rotate freely, but is prevented from moving axially. In contrast to other embodiments, in this case the filter plug remains fixed and the outer ribbon rotates, allowing adjustment of the degree of dilution in the air provided to the mainstream smoke.
The manufacturing techniques associated with this embodiment differ from those of the first two embodiments. First, the process of manufacturing the filter bar is processed in the conventional manner. Once the filter plug and the tobacco rod are axially aligned in a cigarette making machine, the inner ribbon
is applied to the assembly exactly as the paper tip of the cigarette is applied. The modification of conventional manufacturing techniques appears in the application of internal tape glue, the formation of the separating grooves and the winding of the outer tape around the assembly by known techniques. Air dilution apertures are formed in this third embodiment exactly as perforations are currently performed on the manufacturing line.
There is another technique for forming the spacing grooves 8, 108, 109 and 208. FIG. 11 illustrates this technique, applied in the preferred embodiment of FIGS. 1 to 3. Rather than forming peripheral grooves completely, the groove opening device can be adjusted to form partial grooves 11, leaving the retention zone 14 of the inner ribbon attached to the rotation zone 12 by a series of small bridges (13). This expedient prevents angular rotation of the rotary zone during manufacture or transportation. When the consumer wishes to adjust the degree of dilution in the air, the
filter breaks the bridges, allowing free rotation and
tion. This technique can be adapted to all embodiments of the invention.
In Fig. 12 shows another process for attaching the tobacco rod adjustable filter. In all the embodiments discussed hitherto, the means for attaching the adjustable filter tobacco rod is an extension of one of the tapes. For example, the embodiment of Fig. 1 is attached to the back of the outer ribbon. In the technique shown in Fig. 12, which applies this technique and the embodiment shown in Figs. 8 to 10, the inner ribbon (266) extends only forwardly until the end of the filter plug (204). After being axially aligned with a bar
of tobacco (202) in a cigarette making machine, a seaming strip (228), on which underside glue has been applied, is wound around the ready-made cigarette, overlapping the abutment line (207) between the sealing bar tobacco and the filter cap. The back end of the joint strip is shown as not being overlapped by the outer strip 222; this point is a matter of preference for a project having the sole condition that the back edge of the joint tape should not cover the dilution opening in the air 232. The advantage of this alternative is to allow the reliable filter to be fully assembled during the filter manufacturing process. The assembly of the cigarette and filter would be carried out exactly in the conventional manner. The application of the splicing tape 228 would proceed exactly as the application of the conventional paper to the cigarette butt, the only difference being the size of the applied tape.
Those skilled in the art will appreciate that they can be
variants are introduced in the particular embodiment
in the spirit of the present invention. For example, n
different materials may be chosen for the outer ribbon, the inner ribbon or the filter housing to give it collateral or decorative features. The air dilution apertures can be dimensioned and located so as to provide a desired range of degrees of particulate delivery. None of these or other variants depart from the scope of the present invention.
