Abstract

A card 1 is described which when used in conjunction with a photograph 3 forms a postcard-like whole. The card 1 has an adhesively coated edge portion 2 which prior to use is protected by a removable covering (not shown). The edge of the photograph 3 is pressed into engagement with the adhesive layer 2 so that the card and photograph are permanently joined together.

The present invention relates to stationery, and particularly, but not exclusively to postcards and index cards,.

It is known to have a postcard with any form of adhesive on one side so that a whole photograph can be grasped thereon. Such postcards enable a user to select and take the picture to be sent on a postcard. Such a postcard has, however, the drawbacks that the combination of such a carton and a photograph is relatively thick and bulky when compared to a normal illustrated postcard, and thus, as a consequence, mail, in particular airmail can be increased.

According to one aspect of the present invention, a stationery article comprises a rectangular card having its two sides prepared according to a desired mode and having a portion of the end arranged to receive and for which it has permanently gripped an end portion of a photograph so that the photograph and the carton form a unit and so that the carton area, in addition to that of the end part, is available for the intended use,

It will be understood that the term "photograph" pretexts to cover photographic and similar images, such as printed or lithographed images or subjects, and therefore the term "photograph" should not be seen as strictly limiting. In combination with a photograph the card may provide a lightweight but strong postcard that can be mailed in a standard way, or an indexable card that can be archived to conveniently display the photo.

The rectangular card may suitably be substantially half the size of a postcard and may therefore be

be designated as "postal-partial", although it may itself be in or out of the regular size of a postcard.

Preferably, the end portion of the carton has a layer of adhesive which is capable of forming a permanent liner with the photograph and which is normally covered with a removable protective layer, the protective layer being removed in use so as to expose the additive and permit that the end of the photograph is seized to it.

The adhesive layer may consist of double-sided adhesive tape attached to the end portion on one adhesive side, the other side retaining the protective layer until the subject is required for use.

According to another aspect, the present invention provides a combination of a rectangular carton and a photograph! the carton having its two sides prepared in a desired manner, and both the carton and the photograph or both are arranged so that the carton and the photograph can be permanently attached to each other along the end portion of each to form a unit that can be used as a pos, such as an index card.

Referring to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, a stationery article in the form of a carton 1 is prepared on both sides in a desired manner and has adjacent one end a strip of adhesive tape on both sides 2 which is secured by one side to the carton and is suitable for receiving a photograph or the like. The outer side of the adhesive tape 2 is covered with a removable protective layer 4. Where desired, the protective layer 4

2. The carton and photograph 3 together form a unitary object which may be transmitted through the standard mail and treated services as a standard postcard, or used as an index card in a file cabinet.

The resulting "postcard" structure is strong and durable and has a small thickness except for the overlapping portion where the partial poet 1 and the photograph 3 are fixed to each other.

If desired, an adhesive layer providing a permanent bond may replace the adhesive tape strip on both sides of Figure 2. In that case a protective layer is again applied to the adhesive.

The carton 1 may be made of paperboard, plastics carton, or similar suitable material. The carton can be prepared with areas to display advertising when desired. The adhesive tape 2 is suitable to securely and permanently hold the | photograph 3 which may have a plasticized counter-face. Such as

for example, by a plurality of adhesive spaced areas capable of providing a permanent bond with the photograph, each area may have a separate protective layer or a single protective layer may be applied to the complete end part to overlap all adhesive areas .

It will be convenient for the two-sided adhesive tape or adhesive layer to be attached initially to the photograph and the partial postcard affixed thereto.

The cartons 1 may be sheet formed as shown in Figures 3 to 4, each sheet comprising a number of cartons 1 through 1 lb separated by lines of perforations 10 enabling the individual cartons to be removed when necessary. After printing and prior to puncturing, a double-sided adhesive strip 11 having a protective layer non-alike to that of Figures 1 and 2 is applied centrally over the entire length of the sheet; the width of the strip 11 is twice that required for a single carton. The sheet is then perforated in a central perforation sheet 10a extending through both the strip and the sheet so that, upon separation of the cartons 1a and 1b along the line 10a, each carton has its own adhesive strip. As shown in Figure 5, the cards 1a, 1b are then printed

that the adhesive strip is in each case on the same end of the right side of the carton ·

The sheet includes marginal mounting portions 12 at each later end 1, these portions having enlarged perforations 13 and being defined by drill length lines 11. When the cartons are to be sent by post, after fixing the photographs, the appropriate terminal portion 12 is withdrawn from the carton, but if a carton or sheet is to be filed with a photograph or fixed photographs, the perforations 13 facilitate placing in a ring binder, circular file or the like, and the cartons or sheets then constitute separate pages in a file system.
