Abstract
Alumina is produced by sintering a mixt. of aluminous material, limestone and soda, and lixiviating the prod. with a caustic alkali soln. consisting of a recycled process soln. from which the alumina has been partially separated. The aluminate soln. obtained is de-siliconised and the alumina then separated. The recycled soln. is mixed with water to maintain concns. of 10-50 g/l. Na2O as carbonate, 60-100 g/l, Al2O3, 1-5 g/l SiO2 and 0.5-5 g/l paste from the sintered material, the caustic module varying from 1.35-1.45. The SiO2 content of the recycled soln. is pref. 1.0-2.5 g/l. The sintered product is at 100-1100 deg.C before lixiviating. Part of the recycled soln. is heated after lixiviating, to maintain a discharge temp. in the aluminate soln. between 50 deg. and 90 deg.C.
