A laser beam generation system applies a pulsed beam to, e.g a diamond, in order to apply indicia to the diamonds surface. The surface, or the girdle of the diamond, is subjected to the laser beam through an optical system situated between the beam generation system and the diamond. The optical system positions and controls the beam such that the beam is able to inscribe or engrave the surface. The beam scribing width is maintained at 100 microns or less and the indicia can be read by a conventional 10 x magnifier. Computer controlled movement gives indicia based on a series of fine circle. The operator moves a joystick to control the movements of the diamond in the x-y direction. When a facet of the diamond is then viewed through the microscope, a keyboard entry of the related data is made, for analysis in a microprocessor.
