A novel liq. spray system for cooling a body of liq. comprises a press. nozzle for producing from the surface of a liq. a liq. spray chimney of inverted frusto-conical shape. The liq. spray chimney encloses a mechanically generated air draft produced by a fan having an exhaust outlet positioned within the frusto-conical spray trajectory configuration. The system is used for cooling water in a river or tank heated by the hot discharge from nuclear or fossil-fuel powered electricity generators. Cooling is not dependent upon natural wind conditions to produce the air velocities necessary for efficient cooling. Liq. loss from the system is reduced because the droplets in the liq. spray chimney are sufficiently large not to be entrained and carried away in the air draught.
