Ao voltar a abrir o gancho, os cabelos libertados voltam a assumir a sua posição inicial, ficando definida uma madeixa continua e não várias madeixas autónomas e regularmente espaçadas. Para se evitar que tal aconteça seria necessário que, ao ir fechando o gancho, se fossem excluindo manualmente do aprisionamento os cabelos correspondentes aos segmentos não dotados de rebaixo o que seria extremamente trabalhoso e impossível de realizar com uma só mão.
