Abstract
The invention relates to a liquid nutrient for newborn infants or for premature infants, which has a proportion of 10 to 45% by weight of maltodextrin; if a large amount of this liquid nutrient is administered, there is a risk of water intoxication. The objective of the invention is therefore to prevent this water intoxication, irrespective of the amount of liquid nutrient supplied. To this end provision is made for the addition of electrolytes in the form of sodium, potassium and chloride to the liquid nutrient. By the addition of electrolytes, which are preferably added in the proportion of 20 to 40 mmol/l of sodium, 5 to 20 mmol/l of potassium and 20 to 60 mmol/l of chloride, water intoxication is reliably prevented, even in cases where high doses of the liquid nutrient are administered.
