Niniejszy wynalazek dotyczy techniki wydzielania elektronów w rurkach w wy¬ sokim stopniu opróznionych, uzywanych do elektrycznych wyladowan, do rozmai¬ tych celów przemyslowych, jako to: wy¬ twarzanie promieni Rontgena, wzmacnia¬ nie i spostrzeganie slabych pradów, wy¬ twarzanie drgan elektrycznych Hertza i t. d.Wynalazek polega na tern nowem spo¬ strzezeniu, ze nawet w najwyzszej prózni, a wiec w nieobecnosci wszelkiej jonizacji, moga nastapic wyladowywania miedzy chlodnemi elektrodami o temperaturze do¬ wolnie niskiej, gdy tylko odstep elektrod jest dostatecznie maly.W pewnych grani¬ cach odstep ten moze byc tern wiekszy, im mniejszy promien krzywizny posiada ak¬ tywna powierzchnia katody. 1 do 3. W bance szklanej A, zawierajacej naj¬ wyzsza technicznie urzeczywistnic sie da¬ jaca próznie, znajduja sie elektrody B i C.W ich koncach wewnetrznych, zwróco¬ nych ku sobie, osadzone sa ostrza z trudno topliwego metalu, np. z platyny, wolfra¬ mu lub tantalu. Jezeli odstep ostrzy wynosi w stanie chlodnym, np., 3 mm, to moze byc on dowolnie zmniejszony. W tym celu, jak przedstawiono na fig. 1, oba trzony e- lektrod lub jeden z nich, najlepiej ten, któ¬ ry gra role anody, jest wydrazony (wy¬ konany z rurki miedzianej lub zelaznej) i zawiera wewnatrz tego wydrazenia male cialo zarowe, zapomoca którego moze byc elektroda rozgrzana od'200 do 300 stopni; wskutek wydluzenia spowodowanego roz¬ grzaniem nastepuje zblizanie sie ostrz. In¬ ny sposób przedstawiony jest na fig. 2. Napiecie potrzebne, aby spowodo¬ wac wyladowanie nawskros szpary mie¬ dzy elektrodami, wynosi przy bankach próbnych o szparze 0,5 — 1 mm szerokiej, kilkadziesiat tysiecy woltów. Fizycy tlumacza te pozornie niezrozumiala wla¬ sciwosc powstawaniem w otoczeniu kato¬ dy przesirzeni ubogiej w jony .W wykla¬ dach fizyki doswiadczalnej pokazuje sie odnosne zjawisko zapomoca znanych od dziesiatek lat rurek bocznikowych Hittor- fa. Przeciwnie, jedna z elektrod, a wzglednie szyjka banki, w której elektroda jest umocowana, moze sluzyc równoczesnie do umocowania dru¬ giej elektrody. Wszystkie takie symetryczne urza¬ dzenia posiadaja te zalete, ze moze znalezc zastosowanie nietylko prad o napieciu sta¬ lem, lecz równiez i o napieciu zmiennem.W ostatnim wypadku kazda z elektrod staje sie naprzemian raz anoda, drugi raz katoda, przyczem jednak powstajace dwa oddzielne ogniska, wobec malej odleglosci elektrod, niezbyt przyczyniaja sie do za¬ mazania obrazów. 3). Wyladowanie w wysokiej prózni mie¬ dzy bliskiemi niezarzacemi sie elektroda¬ mi daje sie zastosowac do rozmaitych ce¬ lów technicznych. Mozn go, np., uzyc ce¬ lem utworzenia zaworu w sposób powyzej opisany, celem utworzenia rurki wysylaja- — 3 —cej fale Hertza lub rurki wzmacniajacej i t. d. Te elektrony nadaja sie do dowolne¬ go zastosowania, np. w wypadku fig. 4 u- derzaja o tarcze antykatody D, i tern wy¬ twarzaja promienie Rontgena. PL PLThe present invention relates to a technique for discharging electrons in highly evacuated tubes used for electrical discharges for various industrial purposes, such as the production of X-rays, the amplification and detection of weak currents, the production of Hertzian electric oscillations, etc. The invention consists in the new observation that even in the highest vacuum, i.e. in the absence of any ionization, discharges can occur between cool electrodes of any temperature, provided that the electrode gap is sufficiently small. Within certain limits, this gap can be larger, the smaller the radius of curvature of the active cathode surface. Examples of devices that can demonstrate this fact are shown in Figures 1 to 3. In a glass vessel A, containing the highest technically feasible vacuum, are electrodes B and C. At their inner ends, facing each other, are embedded blades made of a refractory metal, e.g., platinum, tungsten, or tantalum. If the blade spacing is, for example, 3 mm in the cold state, it can be reduced as desired. For this purpose, as shown in Fig. 1, both electrode shafts or one of them, preferably the one acting as anode, is hollow (made of copper or iron tube) and contains inside this hollow a small glow body by means of which the electrode can be heated from 200 to 300 degrees; due to the elongation caused by heating, the tips come closer together. Another method is shown in Fig. 2. Immediately to the neck of one electrode is connected a flexible wall of any shape F made of glass or metal, which can be deformed, for example, by means of a compressing device 9, so that the distance between the electrodes is thereby regulated. One of the electrodes can also be mounted on an iron rod, so that its position is adjusted by means of a magnetic field. This type of device is shown in Fig. 3. For technical reasons of maintaining a vacuum, it is best to enclose an iron rod 1 in a small, airtight glass vessel K, permanently connected to the electrode. The whole assembly rests on a spring L made of a heat-resistant material, e.g., tungsten, and is positioned according to the excitation of an electromagnet M, supplied with current from a transformer T, closer to or further from the second electrode. To facilitate emptying this device, it is recommended to place an electrode 1 in the tube in addition to the standard electrodes. of tantalum or tungsten wire in the shape of a bulb loop (S), as shown for example in Fig. 1. This loop is used only during the air pumping process; it can be dispensed with in certain circumstances. The voltage required to cause a discharge across the gap between the electrodes, for sample banks with a gap of 0.5-1 mm wide, is several tens of thousands of volts. This voltage increases with increasing distance between the electrodes and is independent of changes in gas density, provided that the bank is sufficiently evacuated. The passage of the current is accompanied by strong emission of X-rays, the eye noticing a distinct environment from which the rays emerge just near the blades. Apart from the continuous blue-gray light of the focal spot, which is of course visible only when the voltage and discharge current density are sufficient, no other radiation can be seen with the naked eye, and in particular no interrupted spectrum that would be reduced to the glow of some residual gas, or possibly metal particles detached from the electrodes. These facts, in view of the strong rarefaction and the mentioned independence of voltage from gas density, prove that the discharge is not caused by the possible ionization of residual gas, nor is it a light arc discharge causing the ionization material to be detached from the electrodes and destroying the electrodes, but that the operation of the bubble is based on a different principle. If, in this case, the cause of the gas discharge were simple ionization, then the discharge would bypass the edges of the gap and not select them as active electrode surfaces. If, with the gas density of, for example, an X-ray tube of the original design, the discharge has a choice of either a path between the nearest electrode surfaces or another longer side path, then it always chooses the latter. Physicists explain this seemingly incomprehensible property by the formation of a superficial layer poor in ions in the vicinity of the cathode. In lectures on experimental physics, the relevant phenomenon is demonstrated using Hittorf's bypass tubes, which have been known for decades. On the other hand, if some kind of arc formation existed, not only would the electrode material glow in a broken spectrum, but the electrodes would also be destroyed during operation. This latter case, however, does not occur: for example, the cathode tip can be loaded with 10 mil-amps or more for hundreds of hours without undergoing any significant change. The device described in Fig. 1 can be used as a technical source of X-rays. If the object to be exposed is then exposed to a cone of rays touching the edge of the slit, the images developed can even be quite sharp. Regarding the electrode attachment, it is noted that it is not necessary to place each electrode separately and secure it to separate ends of the tube, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. On the contrary, one of the electrodes, or the tube neck in which the electrode is attached, can simultaneously serve as a holder for the other electrode. In this case, one of the electrodes is attached to the other electrode or the associated neck by means of an insulating cap, e.g., made of quartz. Such a device, when working with a constant distance between electrodes, e.g. for the purposes of deep therapy, has the advantage that this distance is only slightly dependent or even not at all on temperature changes. The electrodes do not necessarily have to have the shape of blades lying opposite each other. Any shape can be used, either a hemisphere, or paraboloids with their vertices facing each other (Fig. 2) or the like. In the case of blades lying in one plane, a concentric shape can also be used, so that one electrode is a circular or elliptical disc, the other a suitable ring. All such symmetrical devices have the advantage that they can be used not only with direct current, but also with alternating current. In the latter case, each electrode becomes alternately the anode and the cathode, but the two separate foci created, due to the small distance between the electrodes, do not contribute much to blurring the images. Asymmetric electrode arrangements distinguish one direction of the current, thus acting as a valve and can be used as such, with the electrode provided with surfaces with a small radius of curvature (blades, spikes) acting as a cathode. Such an asymmetric arrangement of electrodes as a source of X-rays is of particular importance when one electrode has the shape of a tube surrounding the other electrode, which has the shape of a spike (Fig. 3). Other similar devices are: a disc entering a hollow cylinder or cone, two cylinders or cones with a common axis, etc. The advantage of the device according to Fig. 3 is, among other things, that the hollow electrode can be used simultaneously as a barrier for rays, if it is made of a material that absorbs rays and has walls of sufficient thickness. When using the device for therapeutic purposes, undesirable effects of rays are avoided, and for X-rays it is ensured that the plates are not shielded by scattered rays. However, if rays poor in soft components are to be produced for deep therapy, then the distance between the electrodes is chosen so large as to ensure that only the peak values (Maximum) voltages caused the production of X-rays. Particularly when working with currents of higher frequency, exceeding 50-125 periods per second of technical alternating current, it is advantageous to choose a distance so that each peak voltage lies just below the limiting value at which current transfer occurs. Then, with low energy consumption and relatively low heating of the electrodes, relatively prominent and penetrating radiation is produced. A discharge in a high vacuum between close, non-incandescent electrodes can be used for a variety of technical purposes. It can, for example, be used to form a valve in the manner described above, to form a tube emitting a Hertzian wave or an amplifying tube, etc. In this connection, it is possible to use electrons released by the discharge on the anode and leaving it mainly in a direction tangential to its surface. For this purpose, the auxiliary anode C is placed in the cavity of the cathode B (Fig. 4) so that there is a small space between them. Insulating rings O, made of heat-resistant material (quartz), connect B and C into one rigid whole, since thread 9 and spring 4 connect them in the stem tube of the cathode B. This cathode is fastened by means of wires S and spring F to the stem K of the tube. The discharge between the edges of the cathode B and the auxiliary anode C releases electrons which either spread further or can be concentrated, for example, by means of the cylindrical cap 1. These electrons are suitable for any application, for example, in the case of Fig. 4, they strike the anticathode target D and thereby produce X-rays. The discharge between the electrodes B and C, on one side, and C and D, on the other, is achieved in one of the known ways, i.e., either by means of two separate transformers Z and R, or by means of the same high-voltage transformer, one pole of which is connected to B and the other to Z), while C is connected to a high-voltage resistor, the ends of which are connected to the transformer poles. In this way, the discharge between B and C regulates the current, and therefore the intensity of the radiation, while its penetrating power is determined by the voltage between C and D.
