Szesciowodny chlorek magnezu nie daje sie odwodnic calkowicie przez zwykle ogrzewanie, poniewaz ulega on przy tym rozkladowi. Proces ten odbywa sie w kilku stadiach. Ogrzewajac krystaliczny chlorek magnezu do temperatury 116,7° C odwadnia sie go o dwie drobiny wody.Ogrzewajac dalej do temperatury 182° C odwad¬ niamy chlorek o dalsze dwie drobiny, a powyzej tej temperatury zaczyna sie juz czesciowy rozklad chlorku magnezu na zasadowy chlorek magnezu wedluu reakcji Mg Cl2 • 2H20 -» Mg (OH) C1 + + HC1 + H20. Powyzej temperatury 500° C na¬ stepuje równiez rozklad zasadowego chlorku ma¬ gnezu na tlenek magnezu i chlorowodór.Taki chlorek magnezu nie nadaje sie jako elek¬ trolit do otrzymywania magnezu metalicznego.Istnieja rózne sposoby odwapniania chlorku ma¬ gnezu, jednak w rezultacie otrzymuje sie chlorek magnezu, zawierajacy zawsze albo male ilosci zasadowego chlorku magnezu lub tlenku magnezu lub obydwu tych skladników.Przedmiotem wynalazku jest sposób otrzymywa¬ nia bezwodnego chlorku magnezu przez dodawa¬ nia stopniowego chlorku magnezu w temperaturze ponizej 180° C bardzo drobno zmielonego karbidu, który w zupelnosci usuwa wode wedlug reakcji.CaC2+H20 - CaO + C2H2 albo CaC2 + 2H2O^Ca(OH)2 + C2H2 Ca(OH)2 = CaO+H20 Woda przechodzaca z rozkladu wodorotlenku wapniowego z latwoscia uchodzi ze stopu.Mialkosc karbidu musi byc znaczna, np. mielo¬ ny karbid powinien przechodzic przez sito o ge¬ stosci 4900 oczek na 1 cm2, ale moze byc i grub¬ szy, jednak wtedy musi byc go wiecej, niz wy¬ nika z reakcji.Przyklad. Po dokladnym wymieszaniu masy pozostawia sie ja do spokoju w celu osa¬ dzenia sla na dnie kotla wytworzonego tlenku wapniowego, który nastepnie w znany sposób od¬ dziela sie od stopniowego chlorku magnezu.
