Przechowywanie znacznych zapasów wegla na wypadek wojny jest obecnie za¬ daniem pierwszorzednej wagi. Wegiel, przechowywany na powierzchni, wietrzeje wkrótce, rozsypujac sie i tracac swe wla¬ snosci opalowe i chemiczne. Rózne sposo¬ by przechowywania wegla, np. pod woda lub w gazach, sa bardzo kosztowne, niewy¬ godne i nie moga byc stosowane w wielkiej skali.Przechowywanie wegla (kamiennego, brunatnego) w rowach, wykopanych w ziemi, powinno uchronic wegiel przed wie¬ trzeniem, a wiec przed obnizeniem jego wartosci opalowych i innych. Sposób taki ma wiec chronic przed wydzielaniem sie z wegla gazów, przed kruszeniem itd. Rowy, wykopane w ziemi, mozna zabezpieczyc np. obudowa drewniana lub kamienna od obsy¬ pywania sie i od zanieczyszczania wegia ziemia. Po umieszczeniu w rowach wegla, nalezy go przykryc deskami, blacha itd., na które nalezy nasypac tyle ziemi, by zabez¬ pieczyc wegiel od. wplywu mrozu i od do¬ stepu powietrza. Przed pokryciem wegla deskami, blacha itd., które zabezpiecza go od zanieczyszczen ziemia, na wegiel nalezy nasypac warstwe malo wartosciowego we¬ gla, np. mialu weglowego, którego czesc za¬ nieczysci sie jednak ziemia.
