The process concerns the decomposition of the tar contained in coumylphenol and dimers of α-methylstyrene in the gas phase into more useful products. The phenol mole, which is a liquid exhausted from the crude phenol distillation column, after removal of macromolecular compounds, i.e. non-volatile components, in the distillation process, contains : 7-15 wt.% Phenol 0-7 wt.% Dimethylphenyl carbinol 7-23 wt.% Α-methylstyrene dimers 32-43 wt.% Cumylphenol 7-9 wt.% Acetophenone A large group of known methods of tar utilization consists in thermal or catalytic decomposition of tar components in the phase liquid. Thermal dissociation of p-cumylphenol into phenol and α-methylstyrene, dehydration of dimethylphenylcarbinol to α-methylstyrene and partial decomposition of α-methylstyrene dimers occurs at temperatures above 500 K. The equilibrium of these reactions at lower temperatures is shifted towards the substrates and the reaction rate is low. In purely thermal methods, it is therefore necessary to use temperatures above 500 K, which in turn causes the formation of significant amounts of tarry products of secondary polymerization and polycondensation and, consequently, a reduction in process efficiency and technological difficulties. The second group of methods are methods of liquid phase decomposition with the use of homogeneous acid catalyst. The most active catalysts are strong inorganic and organic acids, such as, for example, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid. Methods based on the use of acidic salts are also known, such as, for example, acid ferric sulfate. Reactions are usually carried out at temperatures below 500 K, in the liquid phase, by distilling off the reaction products at normal or low pressure. The disadvantages of methods using a homogeneous acid catalyst are difficulties caused by corrosion of the equipment and contamination of the distillate with catalyst decomposition products. Methods are also known. decomposition of volatile tar components in the liquid or gas phase in the presence of aluminum compounds as catalysts, alumina and alumina salts of carboxylic acids. The disadvantage of these catalysts is their relatively low activity, which requires long reaction times in the temperature range of 470-670 K If the mixture is at these temperatures for a long time, it favors the formation of large-molecular tars. The known method of passing the tar in the gas phase over the alumina catalyst only achieves the dehydration of the dimethylphenyl carbinol. The remaining components are practically not decomposed. It turned out that the disadvantages of the described methods can be avoided by carrying out the process of decomposition of volatile tar components with the method according to the invention. The method according to the invention consists in that mixtures of volatile tar components separated from non-volatile substances by distillation are brought into contact with the addition of water vapor in an amount of 2 to 15 percent by volume in the gas phase under normal or reduced pressure. 5 with a solid catalyst consisting of a porous support saturated with phosphoric acid in an amount of 0.5-50% by weight. The support used is substances which do not react with acid under the process conditions, preferably silica. The decomposition is carried out at temperatures of 500 to 700 K, preferably 573-673 K and a pressure of 1 to 100 kPa. preferably from 1.4 to 15 kPa. The concentration of the active substance in the catalyst is from 0.5 to 50% by weight, preferably 5 to 45% by weight. In order to prevent a decrease in the activity of the catalyst, water vapor is added in an amount of 2 to 15% by volume with respect to the reaction mixture. The loading of the catalyst is from 0.5 to 15 kg / h of tar per kg of catalyst. Phenolic tar of the following composition is introduced into the stripper at the mass rate of 60 kg / h: phenol 11.5% by weight. dimethylphenylcarbinol 3.5% by weight Acetophenone 12.8% by weight α-methylstyrene dimers 20.5 wt.%. % Cumylphenol 35.7 wt.%. non-volatile substances 16.0% by weight 41 kg / h of vapor are collected from the top of the apparatus, and the exhausted tar liquid, called pitch, flows downstream at a rate of 19 kg / h. The vapors pass through the furnace where they are heated to a temperature of 650 K. 10% by weight of the vapor is added to the vapor furnace before it enters the furnace. steam. The vapors are then introduced into a reactor filled with 20 kg of catalyst. The catalyst consists of silica on which 35% by weight of phosphoric acid is applied. 5.2 kg of the heavy fraction containing unreacted cumylphenol and α-methyl styrene dimers are separated from the post-reaction mixture by rectification. The vapors are directed to the rectification column in which up to 29 kg / h of the phenol-α-methylstyrene fraction and the bottom 6.8 kg / h of the acetophenone fraction are collected. The composition of the individual fractions in% by weight is given in Table 1.
