Abstract

The passive roof cooling system for a residential house has potential for nocturnal cooling comprising of a typical house with roof structure that was retrofitted by adding a insulation sheet and ceiling board under it to form a parallel plate channel. The air contained in this channel (herein referred to as "airgap") upon being cooled is convected down through the said airgap providing the room or space needed for ventilating air flow. The airgap separates the roof structure from the insulation layer and ceiling board to form a parallel plate channel. The insulation layer and ceiling board isolates the air in the cooling chamber (or airgap) from the warm room air. The sky and the ambient air serve as the heat sink for the system. However, this utility model was limited only to heat exchanges through the roofing module, and so was the cooling benefit provided by the roof only.
