Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reduce the volume of solid wastes, particularly plastics, that is influentially increasing in present time. To achieve this, a prototype is designed to decrease the volume of plastics by compacting it to its fullest ability. The compactor comes with a vertical modular trashcan that addresses the issue of space availability. The prototype is mostly made out of recycled HDPE and PET plastics, and as well as metal. The recycled plastics will be collected from local junkshops, and is melted. Themelted plastics will undergo moulding to form 3 trash bins. Each trash bin will accommodate different types of wastes. Mainly, plastic, paper, and food waste. The 3 trash bins will be placed on top of one another and is clamped to one side of a single metal rod which can be moved in different directions. As for the compactor, it will be made out of Mild Steel Plate (MS Plate) and is circular in shape. The plate is where the compactor handle will be connected, and is also clamped to the other side of the metal rod. As the handle moves down, the compactor presses down as well, releasing pressure on the object inside the trash bin. The compactor only accommodates compressible wastes, because other wastes, such as food wastes, can't be compacted. The compressed plastic, collected from the prototype will then be brought to recycling/collecting facilities therefore promoting "waste-to-money" programs. This will motivate people to segregate their waste properly, in exchange of a small amount of income. The data from the prototype will be statistically treated using Paired T-Test to determine the differences between the volume of the solid wastes before and after using the compactor. The researchers have designed a modular trash bin that comes with a compactor prototype. 3 trash bins that are made from melted HDPE and PET plastics will be stacked on top of each other and is connected to a metal rod using clamps, making it movable to any direction. As for the compactor prototype, the compactor will be circular in shape and is cut out from a Mild Steel Plate (MS Plate). The plate is where the compactor handle will be connected, which will be clamped to the other side of the metal rod. The compactor only accommodates compressible wastes such as plastics, tins, etc. because other wastes, such as food wastes, can't be compacted.
