Abstract

charging station for charging the battery of a vehicle, comprising: a base portion configured for mounting in a substructure; a charging portion having a charging outlet for connection to a vehicle; and a retraction mechanism for moving the charging portion between an extended position in which it extends out of the base portion and a retracted position; and a controller for controlling the retraction mechanism; the controller being configured to: determine whether a predetermined period of time has elapsed since the most recent charging from the charging outlet ceased; and cause the retraction mechanism to move the charging portion to the retracted position if the predetermined period of time is determined to have elapsed since the most recent electrical supply from the outlet.

Claims (25)

1. A charging station for charging the battery of a vehicle, comprising: a base portion configured for mounting in a substructure; a charging portion having a charging outlet for connection to a vehicle; and a retraction mechanism for moving the charging portion between an extended position in which it extends out of the base portion and a retracted position; and a controller for controlling the retraction mechanism; the controller being configured to: determine whether a predetermined period of time has elapsed since the most recent charging from the charging outlet ceased; and cause the retraction mechanism to move the charging portion to the retracted position if the predetermined period of time is determined to have elapsed since the most recent electrical supply from the outlet, wherein the controller is further configured to adjust the predetermined period of time in dependence on the prior behaviour of at least one user, which has been recorded previously and the data committed to memory.
2. A charging station for charging the battery of a vehicle, comprising: a base portion configured for mounting in a substructure; a charging portion having a charging outlet for connection to a vehicle; and a retraction mechanism for moving the charging portion between an extended position in which it extends out of the base portion and a retracted position; a user interface configured to receive an input from a user, the user input setting a value for a predetermined time after which to retract the charging portion; and a controller for controlling the retraction mechanism; the controller being configured to: determine whether the predetermined period of time has elapsed since the most recent charging from the charging outlet ceased; and cause the retraction mechanism to move the charging portion to the retracted position if the predetermined period of time is determined to have elapsed since the most recent electrical supply from the outlet, wherein the controller is further configured to adjust the predetermined period of time in dependence on the received input.

A charging station for charging the battery of a vehicle comprising: a base portion configured for mounting in a substructure; a charging portion having a charging outlet for connection to a vehicle; and a retraction mechanism for moving the charging portion between an extended position in which it extends out of the base portion and a retracted position; a receiving apparatus for receiving wireless signals; and a controller for controlling the retraction mechanism; the controller being configured to: determine whether a predetermined period of time has elapsed since the most recent charging from the charging outlet ceased; and cause the retraction mechanism to move the charging portion to the retracted position if the predetermined period of time is determined to have elapsed since the most recent electrical supply from the outlet, wherein the controller is further configured to adjust the predetermined period of time in dependence on the received wireless signals.
4. A charging station as claimed in claim 3, wherein the receiving apparatus is configured to receive wireless signals via at least one of Bluetooth (RTM), Wi-Fi, NFC (near-field communication) or RFID.
5. A charging station as claimed in claim 3 or claim 4, wherein the controller is further configured to adjust the predetermined period of time in dependence on a measure of user proximity derived from the received wireless signal.

A charging station for charging the battery of a vehicle comprising: a base portion configured for mounting in a substructure; a charging portion having a charging outlet for connection to a vehicle; and a retraction mechanism for moving the charging portion between an extended position in which it extends out of the base portion and a retracted position; and a controller for controlling the retraction mechanism; the controller being configured to: determine whether a predetermined period of time has elapsed since the most recent charging from the charging outlet ceased; and cause the retraction mechanism to move the charging portion to the retracted position if the predetermined period of time is determined to have elapsed since the most recent electrical supply from the outlet, wherein the controller is further configured to determine the charge of an connected vehicle, and wherein the controller is further configured to adjust the predetermined period of time in dependence on the most recent determined charge of a connected vehicle.
7. A charging station as claimed in claim 6, wherein the controller is further configured to adjust the predetermined period of time in dependence on the time of day.

A charging station for charging the battery of a vehicle, comprising: a base portion configured for mounting in a substructure; a charging portion having a charging outlet for connection to a vehicle; and a retraction mechanism for moving the charging portion between an extended position in which it extends out of the base portion and a retracted position; and a controller for controlling the retraction mechanism; the controller being configured to: determine whether a predetermined period of time has elapsed since the most recent charging from the charging outlet ceased; and cause the retraction mechanism to move the charging portion to the retracted position if the predetermined period of time is determined to have elapsed since the most recent electrical supply from the outlet, wherein the controller is further configured to adjust the predetermined period of time in dependence on signals received from nearby charging stations.
9. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the controller is further configured to adjust the predetermined period of time in dependence on the weather.
10. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the controller is further configured to determine if the movement of the charging portion or retraction mechanism is obstructed, and to prevent movement if an obstruction is detected.

A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the charging portion is attached to the charging outlet via a charging cable, wherein the controller is further configured to cause the charging portion to reel in the charging cable before causing the retraction mechanism to move the charging portion to the retracted position.
12. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the charging portion comprises a telescopic column.
13. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the charging station further comprises a data input cable, and wherein the controller may extend or retract the charging portion in dependence on data received via the data input cable.
14. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the retraction mechanism is configured to move the charging portion substantially vertically between an extended position and a retracted position.
15. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the base portion is configured for mounting in a substructure comprising a roadway or walkway.
16. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the controller is further configured to detect a surge in power supplied to the charging station, and wherein the controller is further configured to terminate charging upon detecting a surge in power.
17. A charging station as claimed in claim 16, wherein the controller is further configured to cause the retracting mechanism to retract the charging portion when a power surge is detected.
18. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the controller determines that charging has ceased by determining that a vehicle has been electrically disconnected and/or wherein the controller determines that charging has ceased by determining that the battery of a connected vehicle is fully charged.
19. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the base portion further comprises an anchoring portion for securing the base portion to the substructure.

A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein any of the following are provided: the distal end of the charging portion is substantially flush with at least one of: one face of the base portion when the charging portion is retracted; and a surface of the substructure when the charging portion is retracted; one face of the base portion is substantially flush with a surface of the substructure when the charging portion is retracted.
21. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the base and charging portions form a seal for resisting entry of fluids into the base portion when the charging portion is retracted.

A charging station as claimed in any of claims 1 to 21, in which the controller is configured to control the retraction mechanism to drive the charging portion from its retracted state to its extended state in response to any one or more of: actuation by a user of a physical user input device associated with the charging station, such as a push button or touch screen; receipt of a signal for use of the charging station from a mobile phone application or an in-car system, optionally via a server and wired or wireless network to which the controller is connected; detection of a vehicle near the charging station that can be charged by the charging station, optionally in which the vehicle is an electrical vehicle which automatically communicates with the charging station.

A charging station as claimed in any of claims 1 to 22, in which the controller is configured to control the retraction mechanism to drive the charging portion from its extended state to its retracted state in response to any one or more of: actuation by a user of a physical user input device associated with the charging station, such as a push button or touch screen; receipt of a signal by the controller from a mobile phone application or an in-car system for indicating the user no longer wants to use the charging station, optionally a server and wired or wireless network to which the controller is connected; detection of a vehicle that can be charged by the charging station to be no longer near the charging station; the charging outlet being docked with the charging portion.

A charging station as claimed in any of claims 1 to 23, in which a 1D, 2D or 3D barcode is situated on the charging station, and in use using a device to scan or read said barcode generates a signal which: when dependent on claim 2, interfaces with the user interface to provide a user with information regarding vehicle status such as charge level, remaining charge time, time since connection, cost of charging, and/or the status of the charging system such as whether the system is operating optimally or is damaged in any way, or whether it is due for maintenance; or causes the charging portion to be extended.

A charging station as claimed in any of claims 1 to 24, in which an RFID tag is provided and one of: when dependent on claim 4, the controller is configured to extend the charging portion when the RFID tag is detected; or the RFID tag is inside the charging station, and an external device in the user’s possession, such as one of a smart phone, smart watch and a car computer system, is in use used to detect the presence of the RFID tag and send signals which cause the charging portion to be extended.
