Abstract
There is provided a charging station for charging the battery of a vehicle. The charging station has a base portion for mounting in a substructure, a charging portion having a charging outlet for connection to a vehicle by a cable, and a retraction mechanism and controller therefor for moving the charging portion between an extended position in which it extends out of the base portion and a retracted position. The controller prevents operation of the retraction mechanism if an obstruction to charging portion extension is detected. If there is no such obstruction then it can cause the retraction mechanism to move the charging portion to the extended position for charging the vehicle battery in response to a stimulus, where the charging portion in the extended position is laterally adjacent to the vehicle. The controller also prevents operation of the retraction mechanism if an obstruction to charging portion retraction is detected, and determines whether a predetermined period of time has elapsed since the most recent charging from the charging outlet ceased. If there is no such obstruction and the predetermined period has elapsed, it can cause the retraction mechanism to move the charging portion to the retracted position.
Claims (20)
1. A charging station for charging the battery of a vehicle, comprising: a base portion configured for mounting in a substructure, such as a roadway or walkway; a charging portion having a charging outlet for connection to a vehicle by a cable; a retraction mechanism for moving the charging portion between an extended position in which it extends out of the base portion and a retracted position; and a controller for controlling the retraction mechanism; the controller being configured to in use: determine if movement of the charging portion from the retracted position into the extended position is obstructed, and to prevent operation of the retraction mechanism if an obstruction is detected; where the controller determines there is no obstruction to movement of the charging portion into the extended position, cause the retraction mechanism to move the charging portion to the extended position for charging the battery of a vehicle in response to a stimulus, the charging portion in the extended position being laterally adjacent to the vehicle; determine if movement of the charging portion from the extended position to the retracted position is obstructed, and to prevent operation of the retraction mechanism if an obstruction is detected; determine whether a predetermined period of time has elapsed since the most recent charging from the charging outlet ceased; and where the controller determines there is no obstruction to movement of the charging portion into the retracted position, cause the retraction mechanism to move the charging portion to the retracted position if the predetermined period of time is determined to have elapsed since the most recent electrical supply from the outlet.
2. A charging station as claimed in claim 1, wherein the controller is further configured to adjust the predetermined period of time in dependence on the prior behaviour of at least one user.
3. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the charging station further comprises a user interface configured to receive an input from a user and the controller is further configured to adjust the predetermined period of time in dependence on the received input.
4. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the charging station further comprises a receiving apparatus for receiving wireless signals and the controller is further configured to adjust the predetermined period of time in dependence on the received wireless signals.
5. A charging station as claimed in claim 4, wherein the receiving apparatus is configured to receive wireless signals via at least one of Bluetooth (RTM), Wi-Fi, NFC (near-field communication) or RFID.
6. A charging station as claimed in claim 4 or 5, wherein the controller is further configured to adjust the predetermined period of time in dependence on a measure of user proximity derived from the received wireless signal.
7. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the controller is further configured to determine the charge of an connected vehicle, and wherein the controller is further configured to adjust the predetermined period of time in dependence on the most recent determined charge of a connected vehicle.
8. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the controller is further configured to adjust the predetermined period of time in dependence on either or both of: signals received from nearby charging stations; and the weather.
9. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the base portion and/or the distal end of the charging portion comprises a load sensor to detect a load, and the controller is configured to prevent the retraction mechanism from extending if the load sensor detects a load that exceeds a predetermined threshold for preventing damage from attempting to extend the charging portion when a person or vehicle is blocking it.
10. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the charging portion is attached to the charging outlet via a charging cable, and wherein the controller is further configured to cause the charging portion to reel in the charging cable before causing the retraction mechanism to move the charging portion to the retracted position.
11. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the charging portion comprises a telescopic column.
12. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the charging outlet comprises at least one of an electrical socket and a wireless electric charging apparatus.
13. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the charging station further comprises a data input cable, and wherein the controller may extend or retract the charging portion in dependence on data received via the data input cable.
14. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the controller is further configured to detect a surge in power supplied to the charging station, and wherein the controller is further configured to terminate charging upon detecting a surge in power.
15. A charging station as claimed in claim 14, wherein the controller is further configured to cause the retracting mechanism to retract the charging portion when a power surge is detected.
16. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the controller is configured to determine that charging has ceased by determining that a vehicle has been electrically disconnected and/or wherein the controller is configured to determine that charging has ceased by determining that the battery of a connected vehicle is fully charged.
17. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the base portion further comprises an anchoring portion for securing the base portion to the substructure.
18. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the distal end of the charging portion is substantially flush with one or both of: one face of the base portion when the charging portion is retracted; and a surface of the substructure when the charging portion is retracted.
19. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein one face of the base portion is substantially flush with a surface of the substructure when the charging portion is retracted.
20. A charging station as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the base and charging portions form a seal for resisting entry of fluids into the base portion when the charging portion is retracted.
