Abstract
breathable adhesive bandage (2) comprising: a fabric layer (4) substantially comprising wool with wool fibres, the fabric layer being a woven or a non-woven layer; wherein the fabric layer comprises: a first surface oppositely disposed from a second surface, wherein the first surface is a brushed outer surface that is formed by brushing the first surface after weaving or, after formation of a non-woven fabric layer to provide extra thickness and padding or cushioning to the fabric layer; an adhesive layer (5) applied to the second surface of the fabric layer in a discontinuous pattern such that the adhesive layer is configured to cover 40% - 70% of the second surface of the fabric layer; a pad (6) attached to the second surface of the fabric layer or to the adhesive layer; and a removable backing (7) configured to cover the pad and removably attach to the adhesive layer. The disclosed bandage uses an environmentally friendly biodegradable material, reduces the amount of moisture trapped at the skin surface, and provides a greater degree of cushioning or padding.
Claims (15)
1. A breathable adhesive bandage, comprising: a fabric layer substantially comprising wool with wool fibres, the fabric layer being a woven or a non-woven layer; wherein the fabric layer comprises: a first surface oppositely disposed from a second surface, wherein the first surface is a brushed outer surface that is formed by brushing the first surface after weaving or, after formation of a non-woven fabric layer to provide extra thickness and padding or cushioning to the fabric layer; an adhesive layer applied to the second surface of the fabric layer in a discontinuous pattern such that the adhesive layer is configured to cover 40% to 70% of the second surface of the fabric layer; a pad attached to the second surface of the fabric layer or to the adhesive layer; and a removable backing, wherein the removable backing is configured to cover the pad of the breathable adhesive bandage and removably attach to the adhesive layer.
2. The breathable adhesive bandage as claimed in claim 1, wherein the fabric layer is formed entirely of wool.
3. The breathable adhesive bandage as claimed in claim 1, wherein the wool fibers have a fiber thickness of 13 to 25 microns.
4. The breathable adhesive bandage as claimed in claim 1, wherein the fabric layer has a weight range of 1 to 15 ounces per square yard.
5. The breathable adhesive bandage as claimed in claim 1, wherein the pad is formed from wool.
6. The breathable adhesive bandage as claimed in claim 1, wherein the pad is formed from merino wool.
7. The breathable adhesive bandage as claimed in claim 1, wherein the pad is a woven fabric pad.
8. The breathable adhesive bandage as claimed in claim 1, wherein the pad is a non-woven fabric
9. The breathable adhesive bandage as claimed in claim 1, wherein the pad is formed from a fabric with said weight in a range of 4 to 10 ounces per square yard.
10. The breathable adhesive bandage as claimed in claim 1, wherein the removable backing is one of: a paper backing, a biodegradable plastic material backing, a cotton or a recycled cotton backing.
11. The breathable adhesive bandage as claimed in claim 10, wherein the removable backing comprises an inner surface, and wherein the inner surface is coated to limit adhesion between the removable backing and the adhesive layer.
12. The breathable adhesive bandage as claimed in claim 1, wherein the fabric layer is formed from merino wool.
13. A method of manufacturing a breathable adhesive bandage, comprising: providing a fabric layer formed substantially from wool, the fabric layer comprising wool fibres; wherein the fabric layer includes oppositely disposed first and second surfaces, the fabric layer being a woven or a non-woven layer; after weaving or, after formation of the non-woven fabric layer, brushing the first surface of the fabric layer to form a brushed outer surface of the fabric layer and to provide extra thickness and padding or cushioning to the fabric layer; applying an adhesive layer onto the second surface of the fabric layer in a discontinuous pattern such that the adhesive layer covers 40% to 70% coverage of the second surface of the fabric layer; attaching a pad to the second surface of the fabric layer or to the adhesive layer; and attaching a removable backing to the adhesive layer, wherein the removable backing covers the pad and removably attaches to the adhesive layer.
14. The method of manufacturing as claimed in claim 13 wherein, the fabric layer wool fibres have a fibre thickness in a range of 13 to 25 microns.
15. The method of manufacturing as claimed in claim 13 wherein, the fabric layer has a weight in a range of 5 to 15 ounces per square yard.
