Abstract

Provided is a cathode element (1’) for an electrolysis cell of Hall-Héroult type for producing aluminium, comprising a carbonaceous body (4) of calcinated carbonaceous material connected with the upper side of a metallic collector plate (2). The space between the said carbonaceous body and the collector plate is filled with an electric conductive material, preferably comprising conductive particles. The cathode element is further characterized in that the collector plate comprises at least one vertical metallic current outlet (7) connected to the collector plate at the opposite, lower side of the collector plate than that of the said carbonaceous body. The vertical outlet comprises a socket (10) integrated with the collector plate, and a rod-shaped current conductor (11) is attached to the socket. The present cathode design has shown to be very advantageous with regard to the magnetohydrodynamic stability of the cell it has been installed in, and has shown to have an improved life cycle and space usage and in operation, and it also represents a low cathode voltage drop with regard to a conventional cathode design.
