Abstract

A connector in the form of a modified top hat section has two side sections, one on either side of a central section. Each side section has a wall portion and an extension portion in which the extension portion extends outwardly from the wall portion and has a thinner inner part and a thicker outer part. The outer part is formed by folding a distal section of the outer part over an intermediate part. The inner part is provided with at least one guide. The guide is provided to assist in accurately locating fasteners used to install the connector and to guide movement of the fastener as the fastener is driven through the connector. The fastener has an enlarged head. The guide can have a multitude of different forms such as holes, perforations, slots, notches, grooves, lines of weakness and be continuous or in spaced apart relationship to each other. When the connector is installed, the under surface of the enlarged head contacts the edge of the guide to secure the connector, and the upper surface of the enlarged head extends beyond the thickness of the thicker outer part of the extension portion. The advantage of the perforated top hat section is to reduce installation time and effort as well as allowing the top hat section to be securely installed by the enlarged head having clearance between the side wall portion and the thicker outer part
