Abstract

A top hat section has two tapering wall sections and two flange sections in which each flange section is provided with a reduced thickness inner body portion and an increased thickness edge portion. The edge portion acts as a strengthener to enhance the rigidity of the top hat connector. The reduced thickness body portion is provided with a guide. The top hat section is used for securely attaching a building panel to a support member in which the guide is provided to assist in accurately locating the fasteners used to attach the connector to the support member with respect to the support member, and to guide movement of the fastener as the fastener is rotatingly driven through the thickness of the connector into the support member to maintain the correct orientation of the fastener to securely attach the connector to the support member. The guide can have a multitude of different forms such as holes, perforations, slots, notches, grooves, lines of weakness and be continuous or in spaced apart relationship to each other. The advantage of the guide is to reduce installation time and effort as well as allowing the top hat section to be more accurately positioned to securely attach the top hat section to the support and to allow clearance between the fastener and the strengtheners of the connector on one side and the tapering side wall on the other side.
