Abstract

A system (1) for extracting shale gas in an area including a water permeable layer (2) above an underlying shale layer (5), the system comprising: a production pipe (7) located in a bore hole (9) that passes through the water permeable layer to the shale layer; a filter assembly (21) surrounding at least a portion of the production pipe in the bore hole, wherein the filter assembly is provided at and/or below the water permeable layer to capture at least one contaminant before it enters the water permeable layer; and a funnel (15) located below the filter assembly to channel rising gases towards and through the filter assembly. The invention provides means for capturing rising contaminants released from a production zone during shale gas extraction, preventing or reducing contamination of water permeable layers overlying the production zone.
