Abstract

A method of forming envelope blanks from a length of material is disclosed. The length of material is fed through a rotary knife (12) that has an axis of rotation offset and an acute angle (α) to a transverse axis (A) of the length of material. The knife (12) has at least one cutting protrusion (16) which may be formed on a foil (18) surrounding the cutting drum for contacting the length of material. The at least one protrusion (16) is arranged in at least a partial outline corresponding to the envelope blank. The outline is offset on the surface of the knife (12) by an amount corresponding to the first angle (α) so the blank is formed to be generally aligned with a longitudinal axis (B) of the length of material. Lines of perforations may be formed on the envelope blank (see Fig. 3) to create folding tabs.
