Abstract

709,546. Making envelopes. UNITED STATES ENVELOPE CO. Sept. 16. 1952, No. 23226/52. Class 94 (2) Diamond-shaped blanks 20, Fig. 9, are produced by successive oblique cuts 19 of a continuously fed paper web 18 and the obliquity of the cut and direction 18<SP>1</SP> of the web feed may be adjusted independently, but about the same axis a, for handling different widths of web and blank sizes, while maintaining the web edge in intersection with said axis. The blanks thereafter, whatever their size, proceed in the direction, 21, of their minor axis for trimming at 24, scoring at 25 and notching operations at 26, 27 and subsequent gumming and folding. The continuous web from roll 47, Fig. 3. is fed by driven rolls 54, 56, 57, 58, Figs. 2 and 3, the latter of which comprises a fixed and an adjustable portion to accommodate different web widths. The rate of feed may be adjusted by changing the replaceable driving gear 64 which drives gear 66, on the shaft of roll 57, through an adjustable idler gear 65. Initial threading of the web is facilitated by .means operated by handle 75 to raise the roll 58. In a similar way roll 56 may be withdrawn from roll 57. The web is severed obliquely during its passage between further pairs of feed rolls mounted on shafts 86, 87 and 96, 99 respectively. The feeding mechanism so far described is mounted on a plate 51 which may be swivelled about the axis a to the appropriate angular feed position, indicated on scale 129, and clamped by bolts 128. The web-severing mechanism is mounted on a base 104 which may be independently swivelled about the axis a and clamped by bolts 126. It comprises a stationary upper blade 119, Fig. 8, secured to a block 120 by bolts 122 and adjustable by screws 123, and a rotary blade 116 seated on a flat surface 114 on the shaft 108. The blade 116 is adjustable by screws 118 and secured by bolts 115. The stationary blade is preferably set slightly out of parallel with the rotary knife 116. Means are described for adjusting the lateral position of the web supply roll relative to the datum axis a Figs. 19, 20, 21 (not shown). The direction of movement of the severed blanks is changed by their engagement with the unrelieved portions of rolls 131, Fig. 2, and rolls cooperating therewith, which take over the feed from the rolls on shafts 96, 99, which have suitably synchronized relieved portions. The score lines 25 are produced on the blanks by adjustable discs 154 and the portions 24 trimmed off by, adjustable blades 156, the shaft carrying these members being arranged to be raised when adjustments are to be made. Fig. 11 (not shown). The notches 26, 27 are cut bv angular cutters on hollow shafts 166. 167 respectively, through which the cuttings are drawn by suction from pipes 186. Means are provided for adjusting the axial and circumferential positions of the cutters, Figs. 15 to 18 (not shown).
