Abstract

A window stay having a rivet friction pivot joint (100). The window stay includes a first element (102), a second element (101), a rivet (104), a first washer (105) and a second washer (106). The first element having an inner side (116), an outer side (118), a first aperture (110) and a recess (115) surrounding the aperture on the inner side. The second element having an inner side, an outer side (112) and a second aperture. The rivet having a head (107), a shaft (108) and a tail (109) wherein the underside (113) of the rivet head is concave. The rivet head is engaged with the outer side of the second element, the shaft passes through both first and second apertures and the tail engages with the outer side of the first element. The first washer is positioned between the inner side of the first element and the inner side of the second element and resides at least partially within the recess of the first element. The second washer is positioned between the rivet head and the outer side of the second element, the second washer residing at least partially within the concave region of the second element. The rivet, first washer and second washer provide the friction pivot joint between the first and second elements. The recess provided by the first element and the concave underside of the rivet may act to restrict the extrusion of the respective washers which are partially contained therein. The second aperture defines a bearing surface (120) against which the shaft of the rivet bears, and can allow the shaft to bear across the full thickness of the second element.
