Abstract
Discloses a method of producing one or more fermentation end-products comprising: (a) combining a first biomass comprising saccharides not derived from cellulose with a cellulosic hydrolysate stream enriched with C6 monosaccharides (e.g. glucose) and depleted in C5 monosaccharides (e.g. xylose and arabinose) to produce a blended feedstock in a broth; (b) contacting the blended feedstock with one or more biocatalysts; (c) fermenting the non-cellulosic saccharides of the first biomass and the C6 monosaccharides of the saccharides stream to produce one or more fermentation end-products comprising an alcohol and a polyol, wherein an alcohol yield is increased and a polyol yield is decreased in comparison to fermentation of the first biomass without the saccharide stream.wherein the cellulosic hydrolysate is prepared by a method comprising pretreating lignocellulosic material with hot water or dilute acid to solubilize hemicellulose in the lignocellulosic material, substantially separating the solubilized hemicellulose from remaining lignocellulosic solids, and enzymatically hydrolyzing cellulose in the remaining lignocellulosic solids to obtain the hydrolysate. The fermentation product is preferably ethanol, the fermenting microorganisms are preferably a yeast of the Zygosaccharomyces or Saccharomyces genera and the biocatalyst is an enzyme selected from endoglucanase, exoglucanase, cellobiohydrolase, cellulase, beta-glucosidase, glycoside hydrolase, glycosyltransferase, lyase, esterase, glucamylase or combinations thereof.
