Abstract

617836 A method of treating a carbonaceous material, includes the following steps: inputting a carbonaceous material into a fluidized bed reactor; fluidizing the carbonaceous material with a fluidizing medium to form a fluidized bed of carbonaceous material in the fluidized bed reactor; and heating the fluidized bed of carbonaceous material in the fluidized bed reactor with microwave energy at a pressure less than about 5 atmospheres and in the absence of an external supply of oxygen, to generate a mixture comprising char, oil and gas.
