Abstract

An effluent treatment unit 10 is disposed within a primary treatment tank 400. When effluent enters the primary treatment tank it separates into three layers of sludge 414, liquid effluent 416, and scum 418. The liquid effluent layer 416 is relatively clear with some dissolved or suspended organic contaminants. Further treatment of liquid effluent 416 is required before discharge, and outlet filters tend to become blocked or clogged. The effluent treatment unit 10 comprises a reactor tank; a down-flow media region 202; an up-flow media region 204, an inlet opening 120; an outlet opening 412; a separator (not indexed) and bacterial support media 300. The down-flow 202 and up-flow 204 media regions are located in the reactor tank and are separated from one another by the separator. The inlet opening 120 is formed within the reactor tank through which effluent can flow into the down-flow media region 202. The outlet opening is formed within the reactor tank through which effluent can flow out of the up-flow media region 204. The outlet opening is located further up than the inlet opening 120. The bacterial support media 300 is located in the down-flow media region 202 for providing bacterial residence in that region 202. The bacterial support media 300 is located below the inlet opening 120.
