Abstract

Disclosed is a buoyant actuator (see 10, figure 1) for use in an apparatus (see 11, figure 1) for harnessing wave energy in a body of water, whereby the buoyant actuator is tethered to the apparatus. The buoyant actuator is deployed within the body of water and is responsive to wave motion in the body of water. The buoyant actuator comprises a body having a flow path extending between an open upper end and an open bottom end, and a gate means (115) for controlling flow along the flow path. The gate means comprise a plurality of closure elements configured as flaps (221) which cooperate to provide a barrier across the flow path such that the gate means block or impede the fluid flow through the body in the direction of the open upper end to the open lower end, and allow unimpeded flow in the direction of the open lower end to the open upper end. This results in slowing of the buoyant actuator during ascent and provides the advantage of controlled movement of the buoyant actuator so as to limit the pump strokes and loading on the attached apparatus for harnessing wave energy. A latch mechanism, comprising a magnetic coupling which includes magnet means (241), is provided for releasably retaining each flap in the condition providing the barrier.
