Abstract

592935 Disclosed is an ultrasonic device (1) for use with an ultrasonic cutting tool. The device (1) includes a frequency generator (3), an ultrasonic transducer (6), a vibrating tool (8) and a processor (2). The frequency generator (3) is configured to generate an oscillating signal having a predetermined frequency and power level. The ultrasonic transducer (6) is configured to receive the oscillating signal and generate a mechanical vibration, wherein the frequency and amplitude of the mechanical vibration are controlled by the oscillating signal. The vibrating tool (8) is configured to vibrate in response to the mechanical vibration. The at least one processor (2) is configured to receive at least one operational characteristic relating to the vibration of the tool (8) and determine at least one property of material in contact with the tool (8) using the received operational characteristic in combination with predetermined values. The processor (2) is configured to the control the frequency generator (3) to adjust the frequency of the oscillating signal based on the determined property of the material.
