Abstract

A radio frequency identification (RFID) reader including an extension antenna and method of activation is disclosed. The RFID reader includes a portable reader. The portable reader includes reader circuitry configured to generate an activation signal; a first antenna, where the first antenna is electrically connected to the reader circuitry and a reader housing containing the reader circuitry and the first antenna. The RFID reader also includes an extension antenna with an elongated housing. The extension antenna includes a second antenna located at one end of the housing and a third antenna located at the opposite end of the housing, where the second antenna is electrically connected to the third antenna. Finally the RFID includes a mechanical coupler configured to fix one end of the elongated housing of the extension antenna to the housing of the portable reader, such that the first antenna and second antenna are inductively coupled when the extension antenna is fixed to the housing of the portable reader by the mechanical coupler. The method of activation includes fixing one end of the elongated housing of the extension antenna to the housing of the portable reader using the mechanical coupler. The reader circuitry generates a time varying electrical signal and the first antenna generates a time varying magnetic field indicative of the time varying electrical signal and the second antenna detects the time varying magnetic field. A second time varying electrical signal is generated on an electrical connection between the second and third antennas, the second time varying electrical signal being indicative of the detected magnetic field. The third antenna generates a second time varying magnetic field indicative of the second time varying electrical signal, activating the electronic identification tag using the second time varying magnetic field.
