Abstract

Disclosed is a distillation apparatus (1) to produce distillate(200) from feed liquid (100). The apparatus has at least one heat exchanger (3) that preheats incoming feed liquid by recovering and recycling sensible heat to the incoming feed liquid from outgoing condensed distillate and concentrate. A start-up heater (6) heats the feed liquid from the at least one or more heat exchanger. A degasser removes non-condensable gasses from the heated feed liquid from the heater. The apparatus has a mechanical vapour recompression (MVR) evaporator condenser (8) with a plurality of non-porous plates. Each of the plates has a first surface which on contact boils and evaporates the feed liquid from the heater to produce vapour and liquid concentrate and a second surface which on contact condenses the vapour into distillate. The evaporator condenser is housed in a single chamber capable of operating under vacuum or low positive pressure, the single chamber including at least one partition to separate the distillate from the feed liquid, with the distillate and concentrate pumped from the single chamber. A MVR vapour compressor (11) operably associated with the single chamber is positioned on a horizontal or vertical axis to receive vapour from the evaporator condenser in the single chamber and pump the vapour at pressure back through the evaporator condenser. The evaporator condenser transfers the latent heat of evaporation from the condensing vapour from the second surface of each of the plurality of non-porous plates to boil the feed liquid on the first surface of the plurality of non-porous plates. The non-porous plates of the evaporator condenser have a thickness of between 0.1mm to 0.25mm.
